About Michelle

It is with much enthusiasm that I have become a tutor. I have over 10 years of teaching experience at all levels from pre-k through high school, a teaching certification for grades K-5, and a M.A. in Instructional Design (4.0 GPA). It is rewarding for me to be able to simplify and easily explain topics within the Common Core Standards so that students can go confidently walk into class the next day ready to learn. I understand the challenges that students face and I take pride in finding ways to explain things in a calm and patient demeanor. I strive for that "a-ha!" moment for students and am always looking for ways to help them to become excited about learning. I look forward to putting your child on the road to success! Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have 10 years of teaching experience, a teaching certification for grades K-5, and a Masters in Instructional Design (4.0 GPA). I have spent a lot of time working with elementary students to help them get ahead. I have strategies for helping make concepts easier for students to understand.

Elementary Math

I have 10 years of teaching experience, a teaching certification for grades K-5, and a Masters in Instructional Design (4.0 GPA). I have spent a lot of time working with elementary students to help them get ahead in math. I have strategies for helping make concepts easier for students to understand including topics within the Common Core Standards.

Grammar

I find that grammar is best learned when students are given the chance to write freely. Once they have a chance to write about topics they enjoy, I can step in to help instruct their grammar. This involves teaching strategies for revising and editing, providing targeted lessons on problems students can apply to their and giving students a chance to play with sentence and writing styles.

Handwriting

I am certified to teach grades K-5. During these years students are working on perfecting their penmanship. I have the most experience teaching 3rd grade, when many students learn how to write in cursive. I've taught students how to write in cursive. In addition, I've taught pre-k teaching students how to write in print.

Macintosh

I have been a Macintosh user for about 10 years. In addition, I worked as a computer lab teacher in a high school that only used Mac computers. I'm very familiar with all the programs on Mac computers including iMovie, iPhoto, Garageband, and all of the Microsoft programs that are adjusted for Mac computers. I've helped students create various projects using these programs.

Microsoft Outlook

Before I was a teacher, I worked office jobs and they always used Outlook for email and calendar. I use it also at my current job in higher education. I use it for email, scheduling, calendar, and keeping track of tasks that need to be done. I have about 10 years experience using MS Outlook.

Microsoft Word

In order to teach Outlook, the best approach is to walk students though the basics. After they've been introduced to the important skills, I will assign an activity so that students can apply what they learned to a real situation - this can include creating an invite using the calendar, writing an email, creating a task, reminder and more. I provide students with activities that will give them a chance use skills and knowledge they learned from lessons I taught.

Phonics

During my time as a teacher, I've successfully helped students learn phonetic awareness, reading and spelling. I am familiar with strategies that help students learn how to spell words they hear. I have used the Orton Gillingham method which has given me the tools to teach reading to all levels.

Praxis

In order to become a teacher I had to pass the Praxis. This test can be challenging as it includes topics that we have learned many years ago. The resources and studying tools I used helped me to pass this test and I will incorporate these resources in my tutoring sessions.

Reading

In order to teach reading, I find the Reading Workshop method to be the most effective. This model encourages students to choose their own books and giving them time to read them independently. Checking in with students to check for comprehension is an important step to this approach. This method works well because students choose books they enjoy which helps foster a love for reading.

Spelling

I find that using the "word study" method is effective to help students become better spellers. Word study provides students with the chance to investigate and understand the patterns in words.

Study Skills

I have about 10 years of experience teaching. I've taught all levels from pre-k through high school. With that being said, I have helped students with their studying skills for tests and research reports and presentations at all levels. As a teacher, I am aware of how students should get organized so that they can sort through notes and assignments with ease. If they are able to sort through these items with ease study will become easier. Getting students in the habit of reviewing study notes on a regular basis goes a long way. In addition, I can share a variety of ways that students can study, whether it be written flash cards or an online flashcard activity. Everyone retains information in different ways and I can help students achieve their goals with proper and regular studying.

Vocabulary

I am aware of various ways to help students build a stronger vocabulary. I follow the Robert Marzano method which stresses that in all content areas, direct vocabulary instruction is essential. I find that students learn best when they have a chance to compare words, classify terms and write their own analogies/metaphors.
