About Karin

I am a certified teacher with a BA in elementary education and special education (k-12). I also have raised four children some of whom have learning disabilities. I believe this gives me a unique insight into the struggles of the student and parent at home. As a teacher I have the knowledge of what is needed for a student to succeed academically. My background in special education has instilled in me the necessity to modify my tutoring sessions to meet the individual student needs and learning styles.

I tutor all elementary subjects and students with learning disabilities. I believe in building a rapport with my students that allows me to create a learning environment that helps them enjoy learning. My methods include many different teaching styles that incorporate visuals, hands-on activities or any other tools that will help and assist with the student’s comprehension. I encourage interaction with the student’s teacher so that I can align my tutoring with what is being taught in the student’s classroom. This interaction also provides me with additional feedback about what the teacher feels are areas that the student needs additional reinforcement in.

Over the last couple of years I have helped students with their learning and have found it very rewarding to see them grow academically. I look forward to working with you and your child helping them find success in their learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

In the regular education classroom and in the special educational classroom, I have taught students who have ADD/ADHD. I also have raised two children of my own who have ADD/ADHD. Because of my own experiences with the struggles that these students encounter, I tend to focus on finding ways to help them find success in their learning. I understand that hyperactivity and a lack of focus often becomes a barrier for the ADD/ADHD student and I have come up with many different strategies that can be used to help these students achieve their educational goals.

Aspergers

I have a degree in special education and have personally worked with children who have Aspergers. I understand that children with Aspergers often have difficulty processing information and that visual methods can be a very effective tool to help a child with Aspegers. I also understand that social interactions are a struggle and that someone with who has Aspergers needs to be directly taught various social skills. I have used social stories and social scripts that have helped my students improve their understanding of social interactions.

Autism

I have a degree in special education which qualifies me to work with kids who have been diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Because Autism is a “spectrum” disorder the diversity of symptoms, skills, and levels will vary greatly. Often students with Autism thrive under structure, routine, and visual cues. Because of my Special Education background I make accommodations and modify my students work so that it fits the structure, routine, and visual cues that fits the needs of individual student. My goal is always to provide an environment that best enhances a students potential to learn. I am also very familiar with IEP plans and the accommodations and modifications that are meant to help children with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) be successful. If needed, I can also assist the guardian maneuver the complexity of some IEP plans if they want help. Lastly, I have personal experience with Autism as I have a grand child and nephew who have been diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD). I love working with both of them.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified teacher in Elementary and Special Education. I have taught students in grades ranging from kindergarten to 8th grade. I am very familiar with Arizona's College & Career Ready Standards and so I aware of what my students need to learn each year. I also bring materials based on the needs of my students to help make their learning feel inviting. One of my strengths is my ability to discern my students strengths and weaknesses and then cater my teaching to fit each child's learning styles. I tutor all of the subjects taught in the elementary ed classroom.

Reading

I am a certified teacher with a degree in elementary and special education. Because of my background I have several resources that I use and provide the parents to help with learning. I feel reading is a cornerstone for learning and that it is very important to be taught in a way that students learn to love reading.

Special Needs

I have a degree in special education which qualifies me to work with kids who have Special Needs . I am also very familiar with both 504 and IEP plans and the accommodations and modifications that are meant to help children with who have Special Needs be successful. I am very good at making these accommodations and modifying a students work so that I am providing an environment that best enhances a students potential to learn. I am also able to help a parent maneuver the complexity of some IEP plans if they want help. Lastly, I have personally worked with children who have Special Needs and find it very rewarding!
