I am a certified teacher with a BA in elementary education and special education (k-12). I also have raised four children some of whom have learning disabilities. I believe this gives me a unique insight into the struggles of the student and parent at home. As a teacher I have the knowledge of what is needed for a student to succeed academically. My background in special education has instilled in me the necessity to modify my tutoring sessions to meet the individual student needs and learning styles.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In the regular education classroom and in the special educational classroom, I have taught students who have ADD/ADHD. I also have raised two children of my own who have ADD/ADHD. Because of my own experiences with the struggles that these students encounter, I tend to focus on finding ways to help them find success in their learning. I understand that hyperactivity and a lack of focus often becomes a barrier for the ADD/ADHD student and I have come up with many different strategies that can be used to help these students achieve their educational goals.

I understand that children with Aspergers often have difficulty processing information and that visual methods can be a very effective tool to help a child with Aspegers. I also understand that social interactions are a struggle and that someone with who has Aspergers needs to be directly taught various social skills. I have used social stories and social scripts that have helped my students improve their understanding of social interactions.

Because Autism is a “spectrum” disorder the diversity of symptoms, skills, and levels will vary greatly. Often students with Autism thrive under structure, routine, and visual cues. Because of my Special Education background I make accommodations and modify my students work so that it fits the structure, routine, and visual cues that fits the needs of individual student. My goal is always to provide an environment that best enhances a students potential to learn. I am also very familiar with IEP plans and the accommodations and modifications that are meant to help children with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) be successful. If needed, I can also assist the guardian maneuver the complexity of some IEP plans if they want help. Lastly, I have personal experience with Autism as I have a grand child and nephew who have been diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD). I love working with both of them.
