I taught string orchestra at Pueblo high school, Tucson; Scottsdale elementary and middle school groups and Washington School District elementary school classes, Phoenix area; also general music. I taught beginning Spanish to K-2 classes in the Paradise Valley Unified School District.

I am an experienced symphony and chamber music cellist, with the Denver Symphony, State of Mexico Symphony, Tucson Symphony, Symphony of the West Valley, Sun Cities and presently Scottsdale Arts Orchestra and ProMusica Arizona. I was a former cellist with String Sounds in Phoenix for five years; performed in many schools, libraries and other areas of Arizona as a member of the string quartet.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Cello

I hold both a master's degree and doctor of musical arts degree in cello performance. My degrees are from Yale University and the University of Arizona, Tucson. I have taught cello in the public schools, at the university level and privately for many years. I have performed professionally on cello with a string quartet, as well as many symphony orchestras including the Denver Symphony, the State of Mexico Symphony in Mexico, the Tucson Symphony, and the West Valley Symphony in the Sun City area of Phoenix.

General Music

I enjoyed teaching general music classes along with teaching strings in Tucson, Arizona. I am certified to teach music in Arizona. I have attended various workshops in teaching aspects of general music including multicultural music. I lived in both Sweden and Mexico which enhanced my interest in the folk songs and instruments of other countries. I volunteered at the Experience Gallery of the MIM or Musical Instrument Museum of Phoenix, AZ which displays instruments of other countries.

Music Theory

I began the study of music theory in high school and took classes as I majored in music at the college level. My undergraduate degree was in music education. I taught music theory at the college level at a university in Texas. I have a Master's degree in Cello Performance from the Yale Music School and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance from the University of Arizona. I have lived and taught in the Scottsdale area since 1990 and have worked with students of all ages, especially at the high school level. I look forward to assisting your student with music theory.

Piano

I actually began the study of piano at four years of age before studying violin, then cello. I continued piano lessons in junior high, then as a music education major at the undergraduate level of college, then again when I worked on the Master of Music degree in cello performance. I taught piano as an undergraduate student and again more recently to elementary age students. I accompanied on piano for programs with my string class students.

Spanish

I took many Spanish classes while working on a Doctoral degree in music performance at the University of Arizona. I am certified to teach Spanish in Arizona. I lived and worked with a symphony orchestra in Mexico for three years and at the time took classes in oral Spanish in Mexico City. I later took classes in two summer sessions through the University of Arizona in Guadalajara.
I taught Spanish for a year to classes of children in the Paradise Valley Unified School District. I helped to develop their Spanish program and purchase books and materials for them through research. I enjoy ongoing research to discover available practice exercises and materials online.

Violin

Violin was the first string instrument that I played and studied from the second grade in school. I am certified to teach all strings in the public schools. I have taught high school orchestras as well as group strings from the third grade up. I presently teach violin to two students in the fourth grade; one began with me in kindergarten. I enjoy teaching privately to students of all ages. I previously performed violin with a teachers orchestra in Tucson, Arizona. I taught my daughter violin through high school. Violin study included lessons with a professor at the University of Arizona while pursuing the doctoral degree in cello performance.

Great Tutor for Violin — At this time, I have taken about 7 lessons from Charlotte. I find that I have been progressing rather rapidly. We practice finger positions, hand techniques, sheet music notes, note reading, and bow techniques. I find that I can remember and play pieces that before would have been intimidated to play due to difficulty of the pieces. I like working with Charlotte to understand the history of the vi ...
