I still remember that day in my high school geometry class when I decided that I wanted to be a math teacher! While majoring in both math and English education, I began tutoring while still in college, and I haven't stopped teaching since! After teaching geometry and algebra in a public school in Texas, I have tutored public, private and home-schooled students for over 20 years in Arizona and Michigan.

Over the last few years, my greatest satisfaction has come from leading students through the preparation for the ACT and SAT. A few one-on-one prep sessions have improved or fulfilled college acceptance goals for my students. My experience in teaching middle and high school math enables me to teach the math and science sections. My English accreditation gives me the ability to teach the rest of the test. My one-on-one instruction identifies your problem areas and helps you understand how to correct your techniques, always with the goal of making you confident in your abilities and less anxious about the test.

A few one-on-one prep sessions have raised or fulfilled college acceptance goals for my students. Two of my Michigan students were accepted into the Air Force Academy. Another received a full scholarship to the University of Alabama. Others earned sport scholarships to the UofM and Ohio State (soccer and hockey). A junior raised his ACT English score by 4 points after we spent 4 hours together reviewing commonly-covered English topics. I received a text from the father of a student whose ACT score went from 18 to 24 after we spent 7 hours together.

I tutored a club soccer player who had a scholarship offer to a private California university but had not scored high enough on the SAT to receive it. After taking the Princeton Review and taking the test two times without succeeding, he began practicing for the test with me and made the score he needed to receive a full-ride to a very expensive school!

I worked with a college graduate in MI who had been offered a lucrative fellowship for her Masters program at a noted university in MI. She came to me with a lot of fear about the math portion of the GRE. We worked together on all her areas of weakness with only a month to prepare, and she gained the skills and confidence to take the test and make the necessary score on her first try! A recent ACT student achieved an increase in her reading score from 24 to 29 after meeting 3 times. An 8th-grader qualified for Algebra 2 honors for his freshman year at a Jesuit high school. I am proud of former students who have gone to Ivy League colleges for both under-grad and graduate programs. I also have taught several students who are currently in medical school or have already become physicians.

When tutoring my students in classroom math, I assess areas of deficiency that a student is facing during his current math assignments. We concentrate on all areas that are preventing current success in his course, including both new topics and those that have not been mastered in previous courses or chapters. I am constantly told by students that I explain things in a way that makes sense to them when their teacher can't.

My students make me proud, and I love what I do!

ISEE

I have tutored several students for the ISEE, leading to their acceptances into the Catholic school of their choice. The ISEE tests topics which the student has already covered in middle school as well as topics which will soon be covered in high school. In many ways, it is similar to the SAT. It evaluates the applicant's mastery in both math and verbal. I have also tutored students in the placement test for math in parochial schools. My student (who had already been accepted to his school of choice due to his scores on the ISEE) placed out of Algebra 1 and into advanced Algebra 2.

Understanding

She taught me different ways of learning my material so I could find a way that fit me perfectly. I like how I always practice problems with her and how she will help me with them. She has helped me become more confident in math and helped me get the grade I wanted!

Excellent tutor

Cynthia has worked with my daughter for two ACT tests. My daughter feels she has been an excellent tutor, crafting each lesson to my daughter's strengths and weaknesses. Cynthia is always positive and encouraging. My daughter found the tips and advice she gave for each section to be very helpful. Overall, a very good experience. We highly recommend Cynthia.

Great tutor

Cynthia tutored my niece in her first college semester Intermediate College Algebra class for about six weeks. My niece was very pleased with Cynthia. The proof is in her final grade which exceeded our expectations.

Tutor responded:

John, it was my pleasure to work with her. She was a perfect student because she went to her class, paid attention and took good notes, and came to me ready to complete her assignments! I am so glad that she did so well on her final and received a good grade in her class!!!

Awesome tutor

Cynthia is so patient and kind. My daughter didn't want a tutor, she was afraid they would act like she was dumb. Cynthia has been so great with her. She is really coming along in math.

Tutor responded:

How kind of you to post a comment! Working on ACT math with your daughter has been a pleasure! She has shown me her logical methods for eliminating wrong answers and narrowing down the choices (which is a highly-recommended strategy for test-taking). That isn't something that is easy to teach! She just DOES it! It is a joy to watch! UPDATE on 1/6: Congratulations to your daughter on raising her composite score by 3 points after working so hard during our sessions on reviewing/improving her math skills. That's an amazing improvement!!!!!

Excellent Tutor

Cynthia is nothing short of amazing. We have had three tutors and Cynthia is by far the best one we have ever had. She is not only patient and kind but very well versed in Algebra. In addition, Cynthia really knows how to teach the subject. She takes an active role with our daughter which allows our daughter to really comprehend and retain the material. I cannot recommend Cynthia highly enough. Hire her! You will not be sorry, in fact you will be very blessed.

Tutor responded:

Tom, thanks for sharing your daughter with me! She has a great attitude and really is focused on doing everything with excellence. She has learned how to apply rules of algebra to each problem until the correct answer is found. I especially like it when I ask her to "be the instructor" and teach me how to do a problem! She does a great job of breaking down the process and explaining it verbally as well as in writing. I can understand why her grades were so high! She worked hard and totally deserved them!

Comprehensive tutoring in a comfortable manner

Cynthia is providing my daughter with the instruction she needs to succeed on the math/science portion of the ACT test. She has the expertise required to address any of her weaknesses in these areas. I am also impressed by Cynthia's thorough feedback of her progress after every lesson!
