About Jameela

A veteran educator, having taught reading and writing for elementary grades, ESL and Language arts for high school and college levels for many years, I have managed to stay current in innovative and interesting instructional approaches especially for students who are experiencing difficulties.

While teaching had its ups and downs, I loved every minute of bringing the best to all my students, particularly students who were struggling the most.

I have had training and experience in teaching English as a foreign language and hold a TOEFL certification. All of my teaching has been with diverse student populations.

I brought students culturally relevant experiences and materials that related directly to their own experiences and backgrounds. Black History Month, Hispanic American and Indigenous People's events were sought after for my students to participate in whether they represented their own heritage or the heritage of other groups.

I was a certified and endorsed Reading Specialist for many years. My students made rapid gains in reading and comprehension proficiency. At one school district, I was in charge of their entire Title 1 reading program. By using actual literature, I encourage children to read and enjoy books.

My lessons will quickly have students well on their way to mastering the target subject, in a fun and interesting way. My students learn that good learners have good listening skills, accept correction, ask questions, and have the courage to experiment. I keep the lesson moving along, identifying expectations, modeling and demonstrating examples, and immediate informal assessment, while making sure students are engaged in the entire process.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

American History can be a challenge in these times because the source materials seem to keep changing. What seems to work most effectively is to have students become proficient in their own research and proofs, establishing their own point of view, and being able to express their views effectively. Traditionally, American History has been taught by requiring students to regurgitate provided information, which is fine, as long as it is presented as the facts according to some, even though possibly not believed by everyone.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL classes to adults at the community college level. They were from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Mexico, and South America. Using visuals, props, games, and music, students gain vocabulary and practice ways to communicate in English. Through role playing and experiences, students broaden their use of the language. The teacher models dialog and students practice communicating their thoughts, feelings and experiences.

Reading

I was a certified and endorsed Reading Specialist for many years. My students made rapid gains in reading and comprehension proficiency. At one school district, I was in charge of their entire Title 1 reading program. By using actual literature, I encourage children to read and enjoy books.

Spelling

Besides having students participate in various spelling competitions over the years, I have at my disposal many interactive games and activities that strengthen children in spelling skills. I took Latin for 3 years, and have a full command of word origins that I share with students through a number of exercises and activities. Students keep a vocabulary notebook where unfamiliar words are entered and learned. There is a strong emphasis on words from other languages and countries.

TOEFL

My completion of a course in Teaching English as a Foreign Language supplied me with source materials to teach students from many cultural and ethnic backgrounds without having to speak their home language. Use of gestures, props, visuals, and games makes learning fun and exciting for all students. Through simulations and role playing of real life situations, students are invited to use new language through conversation.

Vocabulary

Developing a fluid vocabulary is essential to language proficiency. I encourage students to keep a new word notebook and refer to it often when an assignment requires writing of any kind. Students are also encouraged to regularly use dictionaries and thesauri as tools for becoming proficient in speakers and writers.

Writing

Many people do not like to write, however, everyone writes even if it's a shopping list, notes to take to a doctor, or what to write on a card for someone. When students develop daily reasons for writing by keeping journals both in and out of class, those ideas can be used to later develop critiques for movies or tv shows, video games. Poetry writing, scripts for a great idea for a movie, plays, spoken word, hip hop or song lyrics, or an intelligent facebook post or text!
