About DeDe

I am an ONLINE TUTOR ONLY. Specializing in Critical Thinking, Education for Adults online, College APA writing style, Best practices in Education, and special education processes and procedures highlight the work I am currently doing when I am not tutoring you. I am also the Supervisor for Student Teachers in Northern and Central Arizona for the Univ of Phoenix and the Az Dept of Education, getting student teachers ready and able to take on their own classes with top quality.

I have 30 years teaching and administrative experience in special education for all levels of categories. I have also taught 12 years in Fine Arts, and was the Fine Arts Director for a very large private school in Texas for nine years early in my career. During that same period of time, I taught for the National Endowment for the Humanities through TCU. I was the project specialist for teachers learning post graduate level methodologies.

I love my students and put 150% of myself into teaching. It is my deepest passion to help children, teens and adults to learn new things that will make their life more interesting with more options for their futures. Trained in Spalding Phonetics, I am a licensed Spalding Phonics instructor for reading, reading readiness and written expression.

Not only have I taught in schools for a huge amount of time, I also home schooled my own teenagers through high school, because our local schools were unable to handle their special needs at that time. We read classics and practically blew up the kitchen in chemistry - no subject was too hard to teach from home.

In 2005, I received a new Master of Education in Adult Learning Online. My specialty is teaching online today. I am trained in how to do this effectively. Am I available at just about any time? Yes, I am! I have MS and am homebound with a beautiful office from which to teach. I can be in front of the computer when you need me!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.


I worked with 504 students who had ADHD and ADD yet did not qualify for an IEP in Special Ed from 1985 - 1994. I am aware of their medicine routines, and the naturopathic remedies and diets often used for ADD/ADHD students. The instructor needs to expect focus for only the time period that the individual can handle - how it is important to engage a student with ADD or ADHD with intense motivation is also very important.
I was a keynote speaker at the ADD/ADHD Convention in the mid 80's, and a presenter in 1988 & 1991 in Dallas, Texas.
I was in charge of the 504 Chapter Students for 3 consecutive years, helping train teachers to work with ADD/ADHD students. More recently, I was appointed to the Children's Council on Awareness for students of special populations, including ADD/ADHD students and Asperger's students who did not qualify under IDEA.
Finding the strengths of the ADD/ADHD student is key to teaching them. Using positive reinforcements and strengths as a foundation, one can insert new learning into the mind of this person.
Above all, students with ADD/ADHD need to be respected as valuable members of society.

At Northern Arizona University, I became involved in the Anthropology Dept as a student and as a field worker in two locations: outside of Tuba City, Az with Anasazi Ruins and on the White Nile working on Ramses II Summer Temple Evaluations/Photo observations. I was on both digs for 45 days under Professor Dr. Scott Antes. My art skills were put to work repidographing pictures of base relief stones that were deteriorating when we got to the site in Egypt.
I taught as an adjunct faculty member, part time : Southwestern Anthropology and Egyptology Cultural Anthropology at Dineh College on the Navajo Reservation from 1991 - 1994 May. I was a part of the Chinle Campus of Dineh College


I was trained at North Texas University in educating Asperger's as well as more severe Autistic children. I used that education when I took a job as Educational Director for Day Hospitals of America (Child Psychiatric Facilities), and did staff trainings in how to help Asperger's and broad spectrum autism in students.

I was the 501 Chapter and Title V Representative for the State of Arizona from 1994 - 1995. This is the area that handles Asperger's and other students with conditions that do not place them on IEP's. We used 504 Plans on these students, which worked well.

The strengths of an Asperger's student must be discovered before learning can take place in other arenas. If the student has a high aptitude in Math, for instance, the best approach to Language Arts is through a methodical process that can be used over and over again to determine worth of writings, rules of grammar, et at.


I received a Bachelors of Fine Arts from Northern Arizona University in Studio Art in 1977. I also won the Fine Arts City Scholarship in 1974 in Fort Worth, Texas in drawing and painting. I am a seasoned artist, showing in the Davis Gallery in Sedona, Arizona and previous showed with the Campbell Gallery in Galveston, Tx.

I still draw on a daily basis, and now utilize this skill in designing metalsmithing jewelry projects and for paintings. I understand design, technique, media possibilities and emotional impact of drawing on others as well as on the artist's growth.


I graduated from the Spalding Program in Phonetics, Handwriting and Written Expression in 1997 in Phoenix, Arizona at the Spalding Institute. I use the Spalding method of teaching Handwriting, using clock methods to develop gross motor arm and fine motor finger skills for writing position and execution.

I have taught countless children to write well. Before I graduated from Spalding, I was using a Steck Vaughn system of writing which was similar to Spalding. I used that method from 1979 - until 1997.


I currently teach Critical Thinking, Critical and Creative Thinking and Philosophical Logic at the University of Phoenix online. I have a Master's degree from TCU in Humanities, and was the project director for philosophy with teachers through the National Endowment for the Humanities for 5 summers in the 80's.

I am considered a senior faculty member at the University in Logic and Critical Thinking.

Music History

I have a BFA In Studio Musical Performance in Piano and Composition. That degree includes 12 hours of music history and 12 hours of music theory (closely related). I have taught Humanities, which included Music History from primitive to modern classical over 20 years. I upped my education in music history in the summer of 1991 by taking modern music history at Northern Arizona University. This bridged the gap between music produced in the 1950's through the present.


I graduated from a year-long study program in Spalding Phonetics in Phoenix, Arizona in 1997. I have taught phonetics in school for over 12 years, using the Spalding method. I understand all sound components and phonemes. Spalding training also included handwriting and written expression skill sets to go with phonetics.


I graduated from Northern Arizona University with a BFA in Studio Music Performance, piano and composition. I have taught piano lessons since 1974 to the present. I am currently the pianist for All Saints' Anglican Church in Prescott, Arizona. I play four services a week.

I prefer to use the Bastien series of piano technique and performance in teaching piano theory and performance.

Special Needs

I have a Master's in Education from TCU in Fort Worth, Texas in Special Education. I received that in 1986. I did my student teaching in Texas for this qualification. Before I retired, I was a certified K - 12 Special Education teacher, broad Spectrum (all codings) in Arizona from 1989 - 2005. I have taught more than three thousand special needs children and adults over the past 30 years.

I have been a Key Note speaker for the LD Conference three times in the past 20 years, and have been a presenter at the LD Conference in Phoenix for 12 years. I am considered an expert in the field of Special Needs Persons. I was even on the committee in Washington D.C., by invitation only, to help write the section of the law that protects special needs persons from birth to age 22 (I.D.E.A.) in 1993-94 for the summer months.
