I have been working with children for over 10 years now. I am a substitute teacher in the Oregon Trail School District as well as Gresham- Barlow and Estacada School Districts. I enjoy the challenge of bringing students further into their potential. I work with students on beginning reading and math skills.
I have a fun approach to tutoring. In reading my students and I explore different themes and find those that make the most sense to help a child grow into an independent reader who reads for the enjoyment of it. As reading and writing are nearly interchangeable during beginning reading I include writing in teaching beginning readers to read.
In math students explore ways to make numbers make sense. I am very hands on while exploring math concepts. I believe that math facts must be memorized to make life easier so I provide many fun games to help achieve this memorization. I have been working with children for over 10 years now. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have my Master in Education Degree, Curriculum and Instruction, from Concordia University, Portland, Oregon.
I hold a Bachelor of Sciences in Elementary Education degree from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona.
I have tutored children in Kindergarten, 2nd and fifth grade with Mobile Minds Tutoring last year. I helped each child improve in either reading or math up to one grade level in about 30 hours of tutoring.
I look for many different ways to teach a subject so that each child learns the subject in the way that suits he or she the best.
I have been cross stitching for more than 20 years. I have worked on small and large projects. I have taught others the basics to cross stitching as well as some of the easier embroidery techniques such as French knots.
I have worked with students in Kindergarten through sixth grade in reading. I worked for Sylvan Learning Center as a beginning reading teacher. I have also worked for Mobile Minds tutoring. Students need practice in the components of reading as well as reading. To me that means teaching phonics and spelling as well as memorizing words. I will work with your child to build his strengths and bring his weakness up to grade level and beyond.
