I am from Huntington Beach, Ca. and wanted to be a Social Studies Teacher since I was a senior in high school. I spent 20 years in the U.S. Air Force. For the first 15 years I fixed fighter jets and during that time I got my Bachelor's Degree in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle. Knowing I wanted to be a Teacher when I retired from the Air Force, I accomplished my Master's Degree in Secondary Education through Chapman University. I have taught in a couple of Charter Schools and Prescott Juvenile Detention for about 15 years but now work for the U.S. Post Office. I am still certified in History and highly qualified in Math and Earth Science.
Why would I like to tutor? I still love the profession of Teaching. However, I have found that large classes and folks that don't care about education can detract from the educational process from other folks. Also, in a classroom, it's hard to focus on one student when there are 30 others to keep track of. There are some students who want one-on-one time with a Teacher. Teachers can't always interpret the information to 30 students at one time. But, I think a student can be taught where there are less distractions and have a say in how they are taught.
Well, I thought I had more chances to put my History/Social Studies info in. However, I do like Math. To me, Math is a 4-letter word people don't like to say but they use it every day. Math is not scary; just a set of rules that we all live by. I do love History/Social Studies and Earth Science.
To the Ladies and Gentlemen who want to be tutored:
It doesn't matter what subject it is, I bet it's Math or History though :), but you have to have a goal. What do you want to achieve through this tutoring? I will supply the scratch paper. Sorry, I have to have scratch paper to show Math problems, History concepts, and Earth Science. Be advised, I am not an artist! If you choose me for a Tutor, I would prefer the Prescott Valley Library. It is public, a lot of resources, and in a semi-central place for folks in the Prescott Valley area. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
