About Amy

This fall I'll be starting my senior year at Northern Arizona University. I'm working toward a bachelors degree in English as well as a minor in journalism and a certificate in creative writing. My coursework in these subjects, as well as my positions as an ENG 105 peer instructor and as an assistant editor on the NAU newspaper, have given me strong content and copy editing skills that I believe would serve me well as a writing/reading tutor for students of any age.

As an ENG 105 peer instructor, I tutor three to four ENG 105 students a semester in a one-on-one setting to develop their writing and analytic skills. I have held this position for two semesters now, and in this role I work through essays and other assignments with my students in a step-by-step process to develop their ideas and then transfer these ideas into a clear and thoughtful essay. This position has strengthened my ability to recognize and build a strong piece of writing and to cater to students' individual needs.

During my experience on the NAU newspaper I have spent a great deal of time proofreading both my own articles and those of others. Because of this experience I am very adept at catching grammatical and content errors, and this position has also built my knowledge of what makes a strong article, essay, or story.

I am also competent in literary analysis due to the wide range of literature classes I have completed at NAU. While I was in high school I completed the Advanced Placement English track, which also introduced me to a wide range of literature and improved my writing skills greatly. I love reading in my spare time and would like to develop this love in others as well.

Because I consider my main strengths to reside in higher-level writing, proofreading and literary analysis, I would prefer to tutor students who are in high school or beyond. While I do have experience working with young children - I was a teacher's aide at a local elementary school for several years during high school - I don't feel that I have enough experience to successfully tutor young children.

I have a gentle and soft-spoken personality and will always be kind and respectful with my students. I will expect them to do what I ask but I will not hold them to unreasonable expectations. My main goal to help others improve their writing.

Please contact me if you or your student would like help with writing or reading of any kind.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I am qualified in college counseling because I am a third-year college student at Northern Arizona University. I'm majoring in English and minoring in journalism, and I have maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout the 72 credit-hours that I have taken so far. I have taken many class related to English and journalism, as well as others including Spanish, Psychology, Cinema Studies, Environmental Studies, and Basic Drawing. Before I entered college I completed successful applications for both Northern Arizona University and the University of Arizona and understand what a college is looking for in a prospective student. I believe that they want to see a well-rounded student with good grades and a commitment to volunteer activities and extracurricular activities, as well as strong written communication skills, which can be demonstrated with well-written essays. I am qualified to help students with their college applications because I have excellent writing and proofreading skills due to my experience as an assistant editor on the NAU student newspaper. In this position I write my own weekly articles and assist others in writing theirs. I have also helped peers with their essays and stories in classes such as Creative Writing and Rhetoric.
I also lived on-campus in a residence hall during my first two years at NAU and understand the social atmosphere and pressures of a college campus. When students arrive on campus they have to adjust to many new freedoms as well as many new responsibilities, which can be overwhelming to take on. Juggling classes, homework, jobs and social activities can be difficult as well, and I have experienced all of these obstacles. My time management skills and prioritizing schoolwork allowed me to keep my 4.0 GPA, and I overcame homesickness and anxiety to find success in college. I would love to help you do the same. I have never counseled college students before and I have no degree or formal training in this subject, but I believe my personal experiences qualify me to help in whatever way I can. I would be most adept to assist in college or scholarship essays and applications, since I am approved in the subjects of English, writing, and grammar.
