I've always had a passion for writing and language, and my background in education has taught me the skills that are necessary in order to teach students in a compassionate and informative manner. My tutoring style is goal-oriented and individualized to the student's needs. I believe that each person has his or her own individual learning style, and I am passionate about utilizing different teaching methods that are catered to the student. My personal goal is to foster a space where a learner feels comfortable and confident and isn't afraid to ask questions. In fact, the more questions asked, the more opportunities there are to learn! I am not limited to tutoring a certain age group; I have experience with learners starting at age four all the way into adulthood. My studies at Lesley College and Prescott College have provided me with with an extensive background in experiential education, learning methods, and the foundations of education. Previously, as a graduate of the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts in Connecticut, I became well-versed in how to teach creative writing. This institution focused specifically on journalism, classic poetic forms and styles, technical writing, and workshop-based editing.
I hold a certificate of completion in Teaching English as a Second Language, and in the past I have worked with Moroccan students as they worked towards integrating their lives in the United States. This certificate has not only trained me to teach first-time English speakers; it also enables me to break down the nuances of the English language. Whether it's your first language or not, English can be complicated to learn. Not only am I able to help students learn English in an approachable way, but I can also help learners effectively communicate using both the written and the spoken word. My travels across the United States as well as to India and South Africa have enriched my understanding as to how to address cultural language barriers and find ways to better communicate with each other.
I am also a self-employed editor and writing consultant, specializing in grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, as well as character analysis and comprehensive story development. The English language is quirky and at times, downright confusing. Scheduling a tutoring session with me is guaranteed to help make sense of it. Whether you need technical help or creative consulting, I endeavor to make learning a positive experience that will last a lifetime. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
