Hello! My name is Jake H. and I recently graduated from NAU with a B.A. in English literature and creative writing. I held several tutoring and teaching assistant positions while completing my degree. My personal teaching philosophy emphasizes helping high school and college students realize their potential as writers and critical thinkers by teaching them to reason and develop effective arguments on paper as well as in daily life. As a tutor, I mainly focus on teaching the skills necessary to perform an interpretive reading while also encouraging students to evaluate prominent themes and motifs so as to synthesize a valid, text-based argument.
I spent four years as the Writing Tutor for the Dorrance Summer Bridge Program, tutoring first-generation university in college-level academic writing as well as classical literature. I have also been a teaching assistant for several philosophy classes. Although I am well-versed in writing about the humanities, my experience as an Instructional Assistant at Grand Canyon University has helped me become familiar with APA-style guidelines.
Please contact me if you are struggling with your writing skills or just want to improve! I am passionate about teaching writing and helping others develop the skills necessary to be powerful communicators.
