About Gerald

I love learning for the sake of learning. Knowledge, like art, is a noble pursuit unto itself. But I lament, classes and school can be boring. That isn’t because the subjects themselves are boring, but because the way that textbooks often present them are. I can help you rekindle your curiosity in history and stoke the creative fires of your writing.

I have a bachelor’s degree in History (I graduated Summa Cum Laude), and I have a Master’s degree in History with an emphasis in global comparative history of the twentieth century and a minor in public history. During my graduate studies, I was a teaching assistant and worked one-on-one with students in the history writing lab. I was part of two student exhibit teams which created Louie’s Legacy a QR code digital exhibit and Through the Eyes of Youth: Life and Death in the Bedzin Ghetto a traveling exhibit about the Holocaust. I was also the Curatorial Assistant for Lowell Observatory’s newest exhibit Space Guard Academy which explores the cutting edge of asteroid research.

I’ve had great professors. I learned from them the skills you’ll need to write great college essays. Organization, editing, critical thinking, editing, hard work, and some more organization. It sounds like a daunting task, but I’m excited to get the opportunity to sit one-on-one with you and guide you through each step. I am also a writer myself. My first published novel, Filtered, has taught me a tremendous amount about writing and editing. I’ll help avoid the mistakes I’ve made and share with you my techniques for academic success

I have always loved films, especially making them. I’ve been doing it since I was a kid in the backyard with friends. In school, I wrote, directed, and produced two episodes of a travel and culture show called the Road North of Phoenix. I also took master’s level documentary courses where I produced a short documentary about ritual violence called Into the Breach. More recently, I developed one and a half hours of documentary footage for Lowell Observatory’s Space Guard Academy. I also just wrapped up a project with Molly Baker Media and Curiosity Stream to make a documentary about meteor observation technologies at Lowell Observatory.

I use Premiere and After Effects to tell stories, and I’m excited to share what I know with you.

History has always been my passion. It’s not because I like lists of names and dates, but because I love the drama, the conflict, the horror, and beauty of human existence. History is our collective story about our past. From it, we can learn about the whole breadth and depth of what it means to be human. I can help you learn the names, dates, and geography you need for your test, but I’ll make sure you also understand the context around each of those facts. Knowing the story will help you fill in gaps in your knowledge and help you connect disparate dots into a rich tapestry of understanding.

Need help making heads or tails of history? Have a huge essay to write? Contact me and I’m confident that together we will come up with a plan to help you achieve your academic goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Social Studies

I won the Tucson regional geography Bee. I have MA in history. I’ve taken extensive coursework in media interpretation through the lens of documentary and portrayals of diversity. I listen to NPR daily.

Video Production

In school, I wrote, directed, and produced two episodes of a travel and culture show called the Road North of Phoenix. More recently, I developed one and a half hours of documentary footage for Lowell Observatory’s Space Guard Academy. My work can be seen here: https://vimeo.com/geraldlamb

Writing

I have a master's degree in history which involved extensive written assessment of my ability to comprehend complex subjects. I am the author of Filtered, a young adult novel, which received acclaim in the Next Generation Indie Publishing awards. I also recently co-wrote the scientific educational copy for Lowell Observatory's Space Guard Academy.
