I regularly work with high school and college students, exceling in breaking down complex social science and humanities subjects to develop understanding of content and hone skills that contribute to students' emergence as more effective learners and communicators. By emphasizing core concepts, I work to improve comprehension and confidence, strengthening critical thinking, reading, and writing abilities. In terms of AP class prep, I ensure that students understand official AP rubric requirements, providing effective models to guide timely, high-scoring compositions.

For 15+ years, I have been teaching in-person and online in high school and college classrooms in the United States and Japan. I serve annually as an AP grader for AP History, most often for AP World History (WHAP), though I also teach and score materials for AP US History (APUSH) and AP European History (AP Euro). As a former English department chair, I supervised and taught AP Lit and AP Lang courses. As an editor, I have managed writing centers specializing in college admissions (Common App, Coalition, grad, law, and medical school), college-level research, and writing fluency, as well as worked with academic publishing firms Cengage, Norton, and McGraw Hill on the revision of major textbook lines. These days I split my time between academics and agriculture, as I run a three-acre organic teaching farm where I demonstrate sustainable practices, provide gardening workshops, and discuss principles of environmental science.

The classes I teach include World/Global History, Japanese History, Chinese History, East Asian Civilizations, Environmental History, American Environmental History, US/American History, Modern European History, the History of Science and Technology, American Literature, British Literature, Literary Criticism, Nature Writing, Mythology and Folklore, and Introduction to Philosophy.

Adam is a great tutor

My son has taken several classes with Adam. So far the experience is great. He also quickly answers any questions I have. I hope my son will get improved in his LA and social study. Will send updates later.

Excellent Tutor & Extremely Knowledge

Any number of words is not enough to describe Adam's ability to teach AP Lang, AP Lit and APUSH. He has the innate ability to make students better thinkers and writers. He evaluates the students gaps and opportunities and his patient and professional approach allows the student to improve! He is extremely organized to ensure effective use of time. We were very fortunate to have him tutor my kid and help her to become a better thinker and writer!

Dedicated, Flexible, and Incredibly Talented Tutor with Multidisciplinary Knowledge and Experience

Adam is a dedicated, flexible, and incredibly talented tutor who truly cares about his students. As I was going through the college application process, Adam took the time to help me reflect on my interests and experiences so I could craft a compelling and unique story that set me apart from other applicants. He helped me elevate my writing skills by teaching me how to think about the messages that my writing conveyed as well as the images it evoked. He would answer my questions outside of lessons, carve out time to meet with me for last minute support, and make in depth comments on my writing to help me grow as a student and critical thinker. He payed close attention to small details in my writing, and he tailored lessons to fit my individualized needs. Beyond college applications and English literature/writing, he has a wide range of knowledge and expertise in a variety of fields that allows him to help students make multidisciplinary connections. He is a wonderful tutor who genuinely wants to support students.

Adam is a fantastic world history AP teacher

My son was struggling with this class until he started working with Adam. My son has a class with Adam every week and my son now not only enjoys this class , but looks forward to the weekly sessions with Adam! Adam is subject matter expert in this area and knows the content in and out. Like my son says "Adam just dives into the topic at hand and I don't even realize when our session is over". Adam style is very motivating and engaging! We love working with Adam!!!

Truly amazing AP English Lang

Adam tutored our daughter through her Junior year helping her in AP English Lang and teaching her how to write essays for her AP History course. Despite the pandemic ups and downs of her high-school, she found in Adam a true teacher who taught her with patience, humor and wit. She loved the time spent in her online lessons and she obtained a five at both AP Exams. We are so incredibly grateful for his teaching.

Fun and very knowledgable tutor at the same time

My daughter has been with Adam for 6 sessions already and so far he has been very knowledgable about the subject and makes learning very fun and interesting. My daughter is always excited to talk about what new things she had learned during the lessons. I'm so glad that I found Adam through Wyzant otherwise, previewing the thick textbook by herself would've been really boring and difficult

US History

Adam is patient, knowledgeable and organized. He is prompt with his responses and teaches my son how to think about history not just memorize. He is diligent about communicating with me and approaches each lesson with goal of helping the student think about his interpretations of the historical event.

Great Teacher, Knowledge and Approach

Adam makes learning fun and helps my gifted student who needed to adjust to a style and format not expected. As well as explore areas of challenge. Another great lesson.

Amanda , 20 lessons with Adam

Patient and funny tutor.

Adam taught me a large amount of things, from analyzing the lives of food critics and chefs to the case of the Radium Girls. He made the lessons both interesting and educational.
