About Joseph

All my life I have loved learning and I very much enjoy teaching others and helping them to come to an understanding. Though teaching is my job, it is also something I thoroughly enjoy doing. I take pleasure in getting to the essence of a problem, and I have a knack for explaining things and helping others also get to the essence of the issue at hand. I try to help students work from where they are and to grow in the skills they need to understand each subject and I try to show how the skills needed for different subjects are good and useful in other areas of life as well. I do not just help students answer questions, though I do do that, but I also help students see the underlying principles and explanatory reasons for why each answer is correct.

In my time as a college teacher, I have had experience both with lecture-based and discussion-based teaching styles, and I use whatever method works best for each student or group of students. I also have experience working one-on-one with students from my classes and in my tutoring jobs and I know how to break down problems and explain each step involved so that every student comes to understand the question being asked and the answer which answers it.

Philosophy is my passion. I think philosophically and I love discussing the topic, and I know how to help others understand what a philosopher is saying and why. One of my tutoring students told me once that I was clearer than her professor in explaining the text, and I try to make sure that every student learns how to get to the heart of a philosophical text and understand it. I currently teach college philosophy and am pursuing my PhD in the subject.

Most people know what it is like to find at least some parts of mathematics to be difficult. And many people have a basic understanding of logic, but may not be able to put their finger on why a particular argument is convincing, or, alternatively, why a particular argument seems to be incorrect or illogical. Math and logic are about patterns and rules, and I know how to see these and show them to others. However, one does not just need to learn the rules, but to apply them to each problem and the information given in each problem, and this is what I am skilled at doing. Each problem or argument needs to be broken down into its parts and to have the rules applied to it, and I help students do this.

As far as language and writing goes, I have always had a good understanding of English grammar and sentence construction. I think instinctively in the patterns of English grammar and I know how to help students notice and avoid errors and improve their reading and writing skills. I have written numerous college and graduate school papers, including a master's thesis, and have graded many more undergraduate papers. I am well aware of what goes into a good and a bad essay and I can help students produce the one and avoid producing the other.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve your education goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

The ACT English section tests not only grasp of the language, but grasp of the language as written. This includes grammar, sentence structure, narrative flow, and many other facets. I understand all of these facets well and can help students come to understand them as well. Over time, I can help students move closer to a more or less instinctual understanding of the language and its structure, which will greatly aid them in writing successful papers and other written works.

ACT Math

I have always been good at math and I can help students learn the principles and skills they need to do well on the ACT math section. Though many of these math questions are relatively straightforward, many others can be quite challenging, and I know how to help students to see the patterns and apply the rules they learn so that they can solve these problems quickly. This involves not only memorization, but quick thinking and thinking on one's own, and I know how to do these things well.

ACT Reading

The ACT reading test is all about quickly understanding the main points of a text and being able to say what a passage is really saying. I know how to do this well, having studied philosophy for many years, and I know how to help students find these points as well. This habit it both intuitive to me and something in which I have been trained, and I can help others learn to do it quickly and effectively.

ACT Science

In all of my studies, including those of my degrees in philosophy, I have learned how to understand texts and how to draw out main points and logical deductions. This is mainly what the ACT science tests asks students to do, and I can help them do this. In addition, I also took more than the required number of science classes in college and have a good understanding of the basic scientific knowledge and skills that are helpful to prepare for this test.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is difficult but also full of patterns. Once the patterns are learned and remembered, which is one of the things I help students do, it is primarily a question of applying them to the information given in each problem. I also help students to do this, and I help them move toward an understanding of the principles behind these rules and problems. The more understanding of the explanatory reasons behind something, the easier it is to understand and use.

Elementary Math

I have always done well in math, and I can tutor students in anything from elementary math to algebra. I can help students find the patterns and learn how to use the rules of mathematics so that they can answer the questions and understand why the answer is what it is. I have helped students in math before and I know how to explain things so that they can move from their present level of understanding to full understanding of the problems and rules in question.

Grammar

I have an excellent understanding and grasp in English grammar. I have written many papers, some of considerable length, and I have graded many more, and I know well what goes into a good and a bad paper. I know how to speak and write well and I can help students do the same.

Latin

I have studied Latin for years and am currently employed as a middle school Latin Teacher. I have a knack and skill for languages and for explaining things to students. Though learning any language requires much memorization, learning linguistic patterns is crucial for understanding a language and I can help students do this and more for Latin.

Logic

I have been studying logic and related fields for years, having earned a bachelor's and master's in philosophy. Though it is often obvious when an argument is logical or illogical, sometimes it is not. In both cases, I can help students notice the patterns, structures, and fallacies that make up good and bad arguments. I can help students come to understand why an argument is logical or illogical. Once one understands the why, he can then produce valid arguments and avoid producing invalid ones on his own with accuracy and style.

Philosophy

I have been studying philosophy for many years, having earned a bachelor's and a master's in the subject, and it has long been my favorite and most passionate pursuit. I have a philosophical mind and can think like a philosopher thinks, but I can also explain these ideas and writings to others. I know how to relate philosophical ideas and ways of expression to everyday life so that students are able to come to understanding, but also to have fun while doing so.

Prealgebra

I have a good understanding of prealgebra and have tutored it in the past, and I know how to help students find its patterns and employ its rules so that they can move forward with their educational goals. Learning the specifics of prealgebra is important for students to be able to tackle the fuller subject when the time comes.

Proofreading

I have been proofreading papers for years, my own and others'. I have an excellent grasp of English grammar, sentence structure, and paper organization. I help students to not only avoid grammatical mistakes, but also build good papers, from start to finish.

Reading

I love reading and I can help students love reading as well. For those who do not love reading, but need to learn skills of reading comprehension for studies, I can help them learn how to understand their texts and how to find the main ideas of the author's arguments. I have read and written many kinds of written works and I know how to decipher evidence, arguments, rhetorical devices, and grammatical constructions, and I can help students do the same.

SAT Math

The SAT math section covers the basics of several branches of mathematics, and I am well-versed in the principles and skills of these different branches. The math section also requires students to be able to process information quickly and apply rules to the information given, and they sometimes need to think outside the box in order to know how to answer each question. I can help students not only learn the rules and how to apply them, but also to think independently so that they can correctly solve new and varied problems in these and other areas of mathematics.

SAT Reading

The SAT reading test is primarily about understanding a text quickly and finding and interpreting the information quickly so that the student is able to glean the most important points accurately. Another key to performing well on this test is finding out what a question is asking and how to find its answer in the test. I know how to do these things well myself, as I often need to use these skills for my own graduate studies, and I can effectively teach students to learn this skill.

SAT Writing

The SAT writing assignment, as recently changed, requires students to analyze an argument and write a persuasive essay detailing this analysis. As someone who has a master's degree in philosophy and who teaches freshmen philosophy classes, I have experience in doing both of these tasks and in helping students to do them. With this sort of tutoring, I help the student from where he starts with discussions and practice in grammar, sentence and paragraph construction, argument-making, argument analysis, and all of the other skills that are needed for this test.

Spelling

I have always had a strong English vocabulary and I know a great number of words and how to spell them accurately. I can help students study and drill so that they can broaden their vocabulary and avoid spelling mistakes. I know that this skill is very important for virtually every aspect of further study and professional success, and I will help students achieve this.

Vocabulary

I have always had a good vocabulary and I enjoy using a rich and varied vocabulary in my conversations and writings. I have an excellent grasp of the English language and its grammar and I can help students come to understand the intricacies and shades of meaning of different words.

Writing

I have a lot of experience with writing, from short assignments to a long master's thesis. I know English grammar very well and I know how to produce the elements of a good paper. I can help students not only to avoid errors, but also to improve their style and expression so that their papers improve in overall quality and effectiveness, no matter the type or length of the assignment.
