About Elizabeth

I am a recent PhD graduate of the University of Pittsburgh having studied molecular biology. My research was to investigate mechanisms of gene regulation, making me an expert in chromatin and transcription. I have extensive experience as a graduate student teaching assistant with genetics and biochemistry and I completed the teaching minor graduate program. I am best suited to tutor genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology, and I also have experience with general biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, cell biology, and developmental biology. Having prepared fellowship applications and a scientific manuscript, I am also able to assist with scientific writing.

My extensive teaching experience at high school, college, and graduate levels in a variety of formal and informal settings managing small and large groups as well as one-on-one sessions in addition to my extensive training in molecular biology and chemistry has made me an excellent instructor. Because of these broad ranging experiences, I have developed the ability to tailor the pace and level of detail for specific individuals. My years of teaching genetics and biochemistry as a teaching assistant have also given me insight into what students find challenging and provided me with opportunities to help students overcome these barriers. This skill is exemplified in repeated statements in evaluations from my students that I am able to make complex information accessible to beginning scholars. Another distinguishing skill that I have developed is creating an engaging learning environment founded on mutual respect between my students and myself as well as among the students in my class. A fulfilling outcome of my teaching experiences has been that my students take away not only knowledge of biology, but skills that will help them to learn anything and gain confidence in their intellectual abilities as they move on toward their future goals. I would be an asset to your educational team and foster intellectual and personal development in your students.

Thank you for reading my profile. Please contact me if you would like further information or to schedule sessions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Genetics

I have taken 4 genetics courses as a student, including an advanced level graduate course. I used genetics in my PhD research. I have also served as a graduate teaching assistant for college level genetics for 5 academic terms and one term of a molecular genetics laboratory course.
