About Richard

My name is Richard (Rich) L. and during the last five years I worked with 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade "special needs" students at an public school in Phoenix. After school and on weekends I tutored 3rd to 8th-grade “mainstream” and “special needs” students, helping them with their Math (my favorite subject), Reading, Language arts, and Science / Social Studies. Working with students with special needs has given me a unique perspective on how to work with ALL students. Each and every child, SPED or Mainstream, has a different set of processing abilities/capabilities and I’ve found that when given the right set supports almost any student can succeed in any subject. Working with special needs students I’ve also learned alternative ways to explain and simplify even the most difficult concepts. As an example, each year in my classroom, during math class, we cover a minimum five different ways to multiply and four different ways to divide. I firmly believe that learning more than one way to complete a complicated operation gives the student a better understanding of both how and why we perform specific operations to arrive at the correct answer, not just the standard rote memorization of what step comes next.
I am licensed to teach in Arizona and I’m certified by the state as a “Highly Qualified” teacher. I hold an undergraduate degree from Arizona State University and a Master’s Degree in Education (M.Ed./SPED-CC) from Grand Canyon University. My plan for the next year or two is to concentrate on tutoring and substitute teaching rather than working in a classroom five days a week so I’ll have time to tutor most mornings, afternoons, and evenings. If you're looking for help I’m sure we could work out a schedule that would be agreeable for both of us. If you’re interested please send me a return email so we can set up a meeting to talk, just to see if we think we can work together. I hope to hear from you soon!

Enthusiastic and fun tutor

Rich teaches my 5th grader math. He was initially resistant to the idea of a tutor. But after one lesson with Rich, he was excited about math and looking forward to his next lesson. Rich knows so many different ways to teach math concepts to make math clear and fun. It is revolutionary and a huge relief for us since math has been a huge weight on our son's back this year.
