About Dawne

My philosophy as a teacher grows from the idea that all of us are lifelong learners. Since my days as an undergraduate Peer Tutor in Writing, I've been hooked on learning theory, especially as it applies to writing and composition research. As a graduate student at Breadloaf School of English, I was able to study with some of the leading scholars in my field, as well as actors and writers from around the world. My tutoring approach, then, combines a strong background in English and American literature with experience as a published poet and a wide knowledge of methods that value authentic assessment, collaboration, writing as learning, and the arts. Currently, I am most interested in the role creativity plays in academic development and performance.

I have taught learners of all ages in many different settings. Recently I enjoyed working with a quality choice-based K-6 after school enrichment program and a private international school in Saint Paul, Minnesota. My teaching expertise includes all levels of English-as-a-second language, K-8 language arts and social studies, high school and college level English and American literature, composition and critical reading. What I enjoy most about teaching is also what makes me an effective teacher—the belief that each of us is good at something, and that is the best place to start learning anything new. Over 30 years of teaching hundreds of students, I've found this to hold true, even with the smallest learners. Sometimes I use art or pictures to begin this conversation, depending on the age and fluency of the student. So, tell me, what are you really good at? What have you taught someone else?

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught as a substitute teacher for the Austin Independent School District for five years, during which time I held several long-term 2nd grade positions and was trained to substitute for the Reading Readiness Specialist. I also tutored two lower elementary children for a St. Paul School Department Vendor, Club Z, and brought each up several grade levels in language arts and math. Recently, I worked as a Community Education Specialist for Discovery Club, a choice-based after school enrichment program at Rondo Education Center.
