My desire to help other learn comes from my own love of learning. I am a lifelong long learner who has taught elementary school for eleven years. I have had the pleasure of seeing my students grow as individuals and realize their own potential. My strength lies in working with elementary age students. While I am well versed in the four elementary core content areas, my specialty is reading comprehension and fluency. I do keep my students challenged but not overwhelmed.
I do hold myself to a high standard. I ask for, and expect, feedback from students and parents. I will not bill for a session if the student or parent is not completely satisfied. I try to be flexible with my time. A 24 hour cancellation is preferred, but we all know that life can be unpredictable. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I completed a teacher preparation program with California State University, Dominguez in 2003 and received my California Clear Teaching Credential in that same year. I taught fourth and fifth grade for Lynwood City School District and Los Angeles Unified School District before relocating to Arizona. I received an Arizona teaching certificate in 2005 and taught fifth grade for Glendale Elementary School District before joining Grand Canyon University.
I graduated from California State University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Music/Liberal Arts degree. My main instrument was classical guitar. While enrolled in the program I focused on pedagogy, music theory, and solo instrumental performance. I also played in several ensembles including a guitar ensemble, guitar trios and duos, and multi-instrumental performance ensembles. I have played in several original rock bands over the last 20 years and have taught privately for several years in California.
