About Rebecca

I have a Master's Degree in Biological Anthropology from the Pennsylvania State University (ranked #1 in Anthropology in the country) and a Bachelor's of Science in Anthropology with a minor in Biological Sciences from Arizona State University (ranked #6 in Anthropology programs in the country). I'm currently a Math/Science Instructor at a private school, and I am adjunct faculty at Mesa Community College teaching biological anthropology. I have tutored/taught for 10+ years, including at the university level. To supplement my scholastic training, I also have traveled to study abroad (Ireland), done research about monkeys (Nicaragua), and volunteered in a medical program (Peru), so I bring an interesting perspective to many subjects.

I have a knack for distilling complicated science topics down to be easily understandable. I'm passionate about watching you grow not only in your scholastic knowledge, but also in your confidence of your learning abilities. I enjoy teaching subject matter, but I also enjoy helping you get to the root cause of difficulties in a class/subject, such as working on study skills.

Additionally, I received the Cambridge University CELTA, which is the most internationally recognized certification in the world for teaching English as a foreign/second language, where I got classroom experience teaching students English in Ecuador.

I am also available for many other subjects, so please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have a B.S. in Anthropology from Arizona State University (2012) and a Master's Degree in Anthropology from The Pennsylvania State University (2015). In addition to these academic credentials, I have independently taught and been a teaching assistant for 4 different anthropology courses at ASU and PSU. Additionally, I have field work, study-abroad, volunteer, work, and research experience in the broad sub-fields of anthropology.

Archaeology

I have a B.S. in Anthropology from Arizona State University (2012) and a Master's in Anthropology from The Pennsylvania State University (2015). These degrees have included many courses in archaeology, as it is 1 of the 3 sub-fields of anthropology.

Biology

As an undergraduate, I minored in Biological Sciences, and I also worked as an osteology research assistant. I have a Master's degree in Biological Anthropology from Penn State (2015) wherein I studied and did research in human evolutionary biology and genetics. I have been a teaching assistant for Human Genetics at the university level.

Biostatistics

I have a B.S. in Biological Anthropology and a minor in Biological Sciences from Arizona State University (2012) and a Master's Degree in Biological Anthropology from The Pennsylvania State University (2015). My focus was on population genetics, which is one of the most statistics-heavy fields in biology. During the course of these degrees, I took several statistics and bioinformatics courses and regularly critically analyzed the statistics used in my own and others' research.

ESL/ESOL

I earned the Cambridge University CELTA (Certificate for English Language Teaching) and received a High Pass B grade. I taught levels from beginner to upper intermediate English learners.

Genetics

I have a B.S. in Biological Anthropology and a minor in Biological Sciences from Arizona State University (2012) and a Master's Degree in Biological Anthropology from The Pennsylvania State University (2015). My academic background and course of study and research is in human and primate evolutionary genetics and genomics. I have substantial background in general genetics, population genetics, biostatistics, bioinformatics, and human genetics (evolutionary and medical). I have done research in genetics labs for the past 4 years.

Religion

I have a B.S. (2012, ASU) and M.A. (2015, PSU) in Anthropology, which has included cultural anthropology as one of the three main veins of study for the degrees. I have taken coursework in American Indian Religions, Religion in Ireland, and World Religions.

Spanish

I have been learning Spanish most of my life; I began Spanish classes in second grade. I took Spanish all throughout high school, and I took up through Intermediate-level Spanish (the 200-level) as an undergraduate in college. Additionally, I have gained proficiency in conversational Spanish throughout the past several years, due mostly to my travels to Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Peru, Ecuador, and Spain. While in Peru, I lived with a Peruvian host family who did not speak English, and I volunteered at a local medical clinic and interacted with Spanish-speaking-only patients, so my Spanish skills were necessarily strengthened through deep cultural immersion.

Study Skills

I have taught Introduction to Liberal Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University, which is a course for incoming freshmen in the college on academic success skills. As a teaching assistant and private tutor for various subjects, my primary focus is on cultivating good study habits that are tailored to the individual in order to increase a students' confidence in their own learning abilities.

Best tutoring session ever!

Rebecca is a very intelligent tutor and utilizes great study methods to help the material 'stick' and commit to memory! She is very intuitive and is the sole reason I was able to make it through my midterm. Her in-depth knowledge and passion of Anthropology and Biology made her an amazing tutor for my midterm study session. I tried 3 other tutors and Rebecca is by far the most educated and well v
