I have been a teacher in one way or another through all of my adult life. I particularly enjoy sharing the joys of reading and writing English, and I have been successfully doing this with people of all ages and backgrounds and in a variety of circumstances, including classroom teaching and private tutoring.
My familiarity with other languages, especially French and Spanish, is often helpful. In my view, language proficiency is useful not only in school and for employment but also for meaningful communication with family and friends as well as in the public exchange of ideas.
While I do believe in encouraging students to stretch and to do their best, I am patient and always ready to encourage and assist anyone who wants to learn. I have many personal references to attest to my proficiency in communication skills and my love of learning.
I have a B.A. from Denison University with a major in French, minor in English. I took numerous post graduate classes in French and linguistics while teaching at the University of Nevada/Las Vegas (UNLV) from 1964-1970. While there I also began learning Spanish. From 1972-79, I stayed home with my young children (an intensive teaching challenge, as every parent knows).
From 1979 to 2000, I was Director of Trade Practices and Arbitration for the Better Business Bureau in Phoenix where, among other things, I wrote the reports on local businesses and charities, monitored their advertising, and initiated the BBB's arbitration program. During that time, I also served as Executive Secretary on the Board of Directors of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. I have been certified as a substitute teacher, K-8, and taught, from 2000 to 2003, at four Phoenix Catholic schools, principally, St. Matthew's and St. Agnes. I have been a teacher in one way or another through all of my adult life. I particularly enjoy sharing the joys of reading and writing English, and I have been successfully
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was a K-8 substitute teacher in a number of elementary schools for three years. I taught English, social studies, reading, spelling and composition. I had to stop teaching to care for my mother.
I am dedicated to helping children of all ages reach their potential, especially in reading, which I believe is the basis of all education and a successful life.
As Director of Trade Practices for the Better Business Bureau for over 20 years, I gave a number of speeches to organizations, church groups, specific business leaders and community college classes.
For several years I was a lector at my church, where I read scripture to the assembly.
I understand what makes a good speech, and I am able to give good advice on what does not work and how to make a speech effective and appropriate.
