I am an accomplished desktop publisher and editor with more than 20 years experience. I have been an amateur photographer for more than 30 years and am pursuing a photography certification through the New York Institute of photography. I have also been a musician since I was five years old. I have taught both desktop publishing and recorder to both children and adults.
My tutoring technique is to explain to the student, have the student explain it back to me, and then have the student do as much hands-on learning as possible during sessions with practice to continue at home. I feel hands-on is very important - if I do it for you, you will never learn. I love teaching and seeing students of all ages learn. There are many ways to explain any subject, and if the first way is not understood, we will find another way until the material is fully understood by the student. My goal is to teach not only the requested material, but also have the student enjoy what they are learning. I am an accomplished desktop publisher and editor with more than 20 years experience. Marcia is very patient and knowledgeable. If she doesn't have the answers she finds them. Marcia really tailors her lessons to the needs of the student. I am very pleased!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been using InDesign since it was PageMaker 2.0 - since the late 1980s. I have used it for brochures, documents, marketing pieces, database reports, even used the book features to lay out a 375 page book and design its cover, and have used it on both Mac and PC. I am proficient in text layout, photo and graphics import from both Adobe native products and other products, and packaging and printing outputs. I have taught InDesign to high school interns who work in the office where I used to work. There are basic non-word processor layout functions that must be understood first, then we can dive into what InDesign can do and how to accomplish what you want. InDesign is my go-to layout program, preferred over Word and Publisher.
I have been a Desktop Publisher for more than 20 years, using everything from PageMaker to InDesign, importing files I created in Illustrator, Photoshop, Word, and Excel. I have designed and laid out forms, flyers, newsletters, brochures, and 2 complete 300+ page books. I have done this for a biotech company, a consulting firm, a school, and several synagogues (both as an employee and volunteer).
The best thing I can say about photography is that I absolutely love it. I graduated from the New York Institute of Photography's Photography Certification program in 2014. I have not taught photography, however, it is a passion I would love to share with others. I have an understanding of all of the basics - exposure, aperture, composition, light, shutter speed, ISO, depth of field, different SLR/point-and-shoot camera dial settings - everything you need to get started taking pictures of which you can be proud.
