University of Arizona (French)
My name is Jennifer B, and I love all things French! I have studied French for 11 years, and I majored in French at the University of Arizona with a minor in Business. I like to stay abreast of the language by taking courses and by visiting French speaking countries such as France and the Islands of Tahiti. I am a certified diver and must speak French on many of my dives in Polynesia.
I specialize in tutoring children from the ages of 3-10 years old. I have two daughters that are 11 and 13,and I have spent many years working with children. I volunteer in the classrooms often by helping teachers with learning centers in the Core Knowledge Program. I feel that children learn quite quickly if you make the learning process fun! With my strong background in French, it is quite enjoyable for me to tutor children in French... including my own! I am very patient, warm, and friendly.
Last year, I chaperoned a trip to Catalina Island with the entire 6th grade at Wildfire Elementary. My duties included overseeing 12 students in my group who were taught how to snorkel in Toyon Bay. With my diving experience, I was able to suit the students up in wet suits and all of the snorkel gear and take them out into the ocean. My patience and understanding of children allowed me to calmly help a child who had an asthma attack right in the water. I then gently sent her back out to swim, and she had a wonderful day. Having patience with children in a learning environment is crucial to their learning process.
My passion for French has given me many opportunities in the Valley as well. I am currently employed with Mondes Nouveaux/Horizons du Monde which is a company based out of France that sends students abroad. I am a coordinator who seeks out host families to secure homestays for the students while they come to Arizona to experience the culture and all of our beautiful tourist attractions. At the end of February 2014, we will have 30 high school students coming from a small town just outside of Paris. During their 10 day stay we will visit many places such as Sedona, Tombstone, and The Heard Museum. I will have the pleasure of hosting a student in my home as well!
I am currently taking a French Conversational Course with Dominique Froidefond. I take courses to stay abreast of new vocabulary, new ways to communicate about modern technology, and to embrace speaking with Francophones.
Lastly, I am a current member L'Alliance Francaise of Greater Phoenix. This non-profit organization offers many opportunities to meet with other Francophones and Francophiles, attend luncheons, take courses, meet for a French film, etc.
All of my work experience involves working with children from tutoring, to Mondes Nouveaux and Jostens, which is a company that sells high school rings and caps/gowns to graduating seniors. I have a strong working knowledge of how to communicate with children of all ages and have a wonderful rapport with them as I enjoy seeing the beam in a child's eyes when something clicks for them.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have been a volunteer at Wildfire Elementary School for six years. I have chaperoned every trip from Sedona to Lake Pleasant to Kartchner Caverns, and took the entire sixth grade to a camp on Catalina Island where the students learned to snorkel with my supervision.
I have a strong working knowledge of tutoring children in the classroom, as part of my job as a volunteer is to facilitate group centers, complete projects, and promote the Core Knowledge Program.
I have a strong backround in French as I studied it for 11 years, and I often travel to French speaking countries. I can converse anywhere in the world where French is spoken, as I find French to be one of the most beautiful languages.
