In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been teaching public speaking for the last 20 years. Because I teach in a classroom, I practice public speaking regularly. My emphasis in teaching speech is in preparing the speech, so the speaker is more comfortable. I try to help with the performance of the speech emphasizing enunciation, gestures, posture, and appearance, so the speaker makes his or her point non-verbally. As a performance-based skill, I use a number of techniques including recording the speaker, so he or she can evaluate his or her performance. I also offer some tips on relaxing and preparing for what many feel is a difficult task.
