Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

My experience as a Student Success instructor allowed me to tutor students in various subjects for college prep. A Student Success Instructor must be well versed in several different subjects as they could be called upon to grade and test for different subject matter during a school year.

Career Development

As a student career coach at a university, my primary job was to help students understand how to best use their degrees in various fields and industries. I taught students how to look at work trends, how to evaluate their skills and to write resumes to highlight their experience when looking for a position that would be a good fit for them. I have a degree in Education and a BA in Organizational Communications.

English

I am a pro at writing, vocabulary and spelling. I can also help you complete English homework, study for finals and polish writing assignments. I have a master's degree in Education.

GED

I was a student success instructor at both University and Community College for 4 years. In that role, I taught students a variety of subjects and worked with students who had mild to severe learning deficits. Part of my job was to help students achieve basic stills in English, Reading, Mathematics, and science. Additionally, I was also tasked to help them with their study skills. I am a great general studies teacher who has a lot of interest in seeing young people succeed.

Geography

When tutoring students in Geography, I use cross cultural teaching methods to add relevance to the subject matter for students to better understand and assimilate geographic data. I teach Geography as it relates to world events to give context to students regarding different cultures and to help students learn to think critically about how world events both past and present may effect them.

Grammar

I was an instructor for student success at a community college. I taught students writing, reading, and grammar. As an instructor, I helped students learn to write more effectively and to you proper words and punctuation in their essays. I have a master's degree in Education and a BA in Communications.

Reading

I am a communications major with an interest in both fiction and non-fiction writing. I also taught student reading as a instructor at a local community college. I am interested in how students learn and think critically about what they read.

Spelling

As an instructor for student success, I taught students reading, writing and grammar. This included how to properly spell words in written and typed correspondence. For younger students I use the Trace, Copy, and Recall methods. Additionally, I use Reverse Chaining by Syllable or Reverse Chaining by Letter with students learning new words. Lastly for older students, I use the Word Study method which helps the brain recognize patterns in words that increase recall. I have a master's degree in Education with an emphasis on learning.

Study Skills

As a Student Success Instructor at a community college, I taught students how to read and study, which are the keys to college success. I used ORID (Objective, Reflective, Interpretive, Decisional) a method is a form of a structured conversation led by a facilitator or instructor. ORID is a type of Focused Conversation Method that teaches students to answer questions for many different types of subject matter through individual and group critical thinking. I have a certificate in Youth Group Facilitation from ToP Facilitation via a non-profit called Arizona Call-A-Teen.

Vocabulary

I teach vocabulary within the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) is an essential component of standards-based curriculum alignment. I help students understand how to make critical words second nature which will enhance achievement on assessments and will be useful in college and career choices. I also help students learn to to process and store the academic vocabulary.

World History

As a Human Communications major, I understand that world events and the effects they have on people is a important thing for students to know. I use student-centered instruction when teaching history because the learning method is cooperative, collaborative, and community-oriented. When teaching history it is good for students to direct their own learning and to research projects and assignments that are both culturally and socially relevant to them. Historical data can be better contextualized by students if they can relate the events to something with in their own world or cultural views.

Writing

I am able to teach students how to effectively write about a variety of subjects. I use the Who/How/Why model which helps student gauge who their audience is, how the written work will affect their audience and why their ideas or content is important. I have a strong back ground in proofreading papers and giving tips to students that will help them improve their overall work.

Best tutor ever — During our first meeting, Shelley had me set short-term and long-term career goals. Not only did I set goals but Shelley challenged me to think about why I was setting these goals. This demonstrated that Shelley had in-depth experience with exploring the concept of personal and career growth. From this exercise, I realized that I was fully focused on career growth without consideration to my well- ...
