I contacted Ian for very specific training in either InDesign or Illustrator. I did not know which would best fit my needs of the moment. Since we live at opposite ends of the valley and we both have laptops, we met at an agreed location in between. He determined InDesign was best for me at this time and then spent three hours (my parameters) giving me basics for an overview and then addressing my needs. Ian knows how to teach in a language you understand. By this I mean that, with my knowledge in the computer world, I stand on the edge of a precipice, sometimes understanding and many times not having a clue and feeling like I am dropping fast. He helped me to understand and grasp what I was learning. He was thorough and patient and quite knowledgeable, knowing both the Mac and the PC. The part that has made this training completely worthwhile for me is his follow-up. Of course I took notes, but when I got home I found they were not as thorough as I would have liked. I should have taped the training. And I was not able to work on it for several days after the training, so, naturally, I forgot quite a bit. Ian has graciously worked with me by email; still showing his patience. I email my dilemma and he emails my options, articulately presented. He helps me work through any problems I might be having. Bottom line is that I am very pleased with the the training that Ian gave me. I would be happy to recommend him to whoever inquires.
I had no experience with InDesign and committed to completing a layout for a magazine in under a month. Ian heard my needs and immediate questions without losing sight of the skills that would make me successful in the long term. He broke the things I needed to learn into manageable bites that allowed me to see progress while providing a foundation that will hold up over time. Ian is responsive, reliable, understanding, and kind. I find him easy to learn from and work with. He understands what is important and listens to what is needed. I recommend him highly.
I had my first HTML/CSS lesson with Ian, for 2 hours. It went very well. Ian has a very fluid yet structured approach in his teaching style. He interviewed me first to clearly understand what I was looking to learn and how much I already knew. He used the rest of the time to help me understand concepts that I will need to have in order to build any website. What I most appreciate is he understands getting right down to business and not wasting my time with topics I'm not yet ready for and being candid about which topics will be shared later after I've learned basics. I'm looking forward to practicing what he has taught me so far and our next lesson.
Ian could be the poster person for what excellent tutoring is about. His teaching skills are supplemented by an easy, good natured manner and his subject knowledge is leading edge. At the risk of sounding over the top he is the amalgam of every good teacher I've ever had. He's the kind of person you would want as a friend. It was a very wonderful and beneficial learning session.
I had a list of questions and Ian was able to answer all of them. He even showed me more than one way to do something on Photoshop.
I don't approve of teachers that sputter and stall out all the time. Ian was right on. He understood my learning concerns I got me to my destination on time, and didn't even loose my luggage. It was a great lesson, he knows what he's doing. I will use him again in the future.
Ian has helped me jump start my design skills with InDesign CS5.5 and Photoshop. He is knowledgeable about the programs and has a great sense of design. He has helped me learn the software in a real world environment and added design skills along the way. He is very patient and supportive. If you need some help, he can provide a very cost effective way to learn these complicated and sophisticated programs.
Ian came over to assist our daughter with her Photo Editing. We gave her Photoshop Elements for Christmas, but she was intimidated to learn on her own. Ian was on time, very patient, and she felt very comfortable. He went over the basics with her, and she is up and running. I have referred him to my friend for similar coaching.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In my opinion, Illustrator is highly underrated. Perhaps it is because it is not fully understood or access to the general public - who general thinks in terms of Photoshop. However, Illustrator has great benefits and options for you and is truly an asset to your arsenal.
For many years, I have used InDesign directly in my work from designing brochures and newsletters to laying out books and pamphlets.
I have taught courses on InDesign at the college level and present participate in an InDesign Users Group.
InDesign continues to be one of my favorite page layout software applications.
I have used Photoshop extensively from the creation of graphics to photograph editing to production applications. Along with Illustrator, InDesign, QuarkXpress and Acrobat, I have incorporated Photoshop in many ways to accomplish many tasks.
