About Lindsay

I am a passionate and experienced middle school teacher with several certifications and endorsements. I graduated from the University of Arizona in 2007 and spent the next seven years teaching in Ghana, West Africa; Tempe, AZ; and Seattle, WA.

My specialty is math and I have a heart for not only helping students be successful in the subject, but understand it's relevance in everyday life and learn to love it! However, If you are looking for someone to assist in several subject area, I am also comfortable with Spanish, Reading, study skills, and all elementary subjects. AND If your student needs assistance in organization and time management, I'm your girl!

My goal as a teacher and a tutor is to continually motivate and encourage students, but not overwhelm them. I want students to feel successful and confident and will provide them with multiple opportunities to do so. I may give small homework assignments or assessments on occasion that will help provide me with the data necessary to judge the student's progress and adjust my instruction accordingly.

My tutoring sessions can take place either in the student's home, or in a public location nearby, depending on the client's preference. I am very flexible, but I do believe my time is valuable and require a 24 hour cancellation policy.

I look forward to hearing from you soon and helping you develop the confidence necessary for student success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

My teaching experience has primarily been in inclusion classrooms with students who have a variety of specific learning needs. I am comfortable working with students who have ADD/ADHD and have many effective techniques that help keep them focused and engaged in learning. I love working with these high energy students and try to keep them on task through movement and song. I also use different reward systems to help motivate them.

Aspergers

I have 6 years of experience in tutoring students with Aspergers, primarily from late Elementary through middle school in the area of math. I utilize a lot of visuals and manipulatives in my instruction. I am proficient at utilizing their strengths to help them in weaker subject areas and try to promote positive social behaviors throughout the tutoring sessions as well. My tutoring sessions with these students often follow a specific schedule and revolve around the students' interests in order to ease any anxiety about the situation and increase student motivation.

Elementary (K-6th)

My degree was in Elementary Education from the University of Arizona. I spent 3 years studying elementary psychology and child development as well as teaching methods. My student teaching was also performed at the 6th grade level with an emphasis in science and math.

Softball

I played both school and competitive softball through high school. I understand the strategies of the game and methods of coaching. I am good at critiquing technique, promoting physical fitness, and fostering a good work ethic and team environment.

Spanish

I completed 4 years of Spanish at the high school level, but didn't really have a firm grasp on the language until my husband and I traveled in Central and South America for a year! I now have a well rounded vocabulary and cultural experience that would be beneficial for any student.

Special Needs

I have taught for 5 years in a public school setting where it is a full inclusion environment. Students with disabilities ranging from ADD to Aspergers to specific learning disabilities have been present in my classes and I have modified the curriculum, learning activities, and assessments to suit their individual needs.

Study Skills

I am very organized in my personal and professional life and have helped lead my students to do the same. I implement a binder system in my classroom that fosters good study skills and personal responsibility. I have utilized positive reinforcement to help make these skills more permanent and self-regulated in students.

Track & Field

I ran track competitively through high school, primarily hurdles and long jump. I understand the strategies and methods of coaching. I am good at critiquing technique, promoting physical fitness, and fostering a good work ethic and team environment.

Volleyball

I played both school and competitive volleyball through high school. I understand the strategies of the game and methods of coaching. I am good at critiquing technique, promoting physical fitness, and fostering a good work ethic and team environment.
