Hi, my name is Mandy H. I am a certified and highly qualified elementary school K-8 grade teacher in Arizona. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Arizona State University in 2001. I began substitute teaching and tutoring privately after college, which exposed me to a lot of different teaching and learning techniques. I have experience tutoring math, reading, and writing. I also have experience tutoring students with a variety of special needs including ADHD and other learning disabilities. It was this, which pushed me to receive my Master’s degree in Educational Intervention from Ottawa University. This program taught me how to adapt my teaching to the unique needs of students.

During this time, I had begun teaching at an urban charter school in Phoenix as a Saturday School instructor in the areas of reading and writing for seventh and eighth graders. The following year I began teaching fourth grade for the same school. This continued for two years. In my final year there, I taught in the Elementary Special Education Department. While in this situation, I excelled at making adaptions and modifications to make sure that all of my students were successful. After this, I worked as a fourth grade teacher for another school where I used my skills to ensure success again.

I have a disabling condition myself, which helps me be a better teacher and tutor. I understand many of the frustrations that parents and students may feel when dealing with social and academic struggles that may be unique to some families. My own experiences help parents and students understand how to advocate and work with the school systems to ensure success for the student, which is why I became an educator ten years ago. I am proud to be a role model for students and teach them that everyone can be whatever they wish, as long as you want it bad enough! My teaching style can best be described as adaptable. Not every student learns the same way, so before I begin tutoring someone, I want to know as much as possible about the student so that I can use what he or she are great at to help them overcome weaknesses. I will use hands on, visual and auditory input to stimulate the learning process in a student. I will always put a student's unique needs above everything else. I believe that this formula ensures success for all involved!

Elementary science can be really boring for students. I like to activate a students imagination when teaching concepts such as the scientific method, Earth, and space science. I like to use project based exploration because it allows my students to engage with the material using all five senses. This is essential to helping students retain the knowledge taught.

This could also work for any type of reading comprehension exercises that would require students to recall information about what they read. I've also found that the use of such strategies can also be used to reduce the anxiety that the student feels while taking reading comprehension tests.

Excellent in every way!

I selected Mandy to tutor my two daughters. As a teacher she will speak with or email your teachers or kids teachers! Wow! She has brought out a wonderful new attitude about homework in each of them. Now, our evening homework is positive, effective and meaningful. What I appreciate most about Mandy is her deep insight into what a student needs to succeed. She uses her experience and puts a lot of thought into her approach. My girls are very different and Mandy flexes easily from one to the other. They are smiling with success at the end of each session with Mandy. To finally see them be proud of their work is gratifying. I definitely recommend this encouraging, patient and brilliant tutor. We are grateful for her.
