Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

My college major is in Advertising, my minor is in Business Management, with completed courses in Business Law I, Business Ethics I, Human Resources and Marketing in my transcripts. During my undergrad years, I was the Finance Manager for my college's newspaper "The Log." I walked door to door selling advertising space to local businesses. I was very successful. Upon graduation, my manager asked me to stay on with them to continue selling AD space on a commission basis. Instead, my husband and I bought a carpet cleaning business and for six years I advertised, booked appointments, and followed up with both residential and commercial clients while my husband performed the labor. Additionally, we were members of the Beverly, MA chapter of Business Networking International (BNI). BNI is similar to the BBB except it is all referral based. In our 6th year, we sold the carpet cleaning van and our customer list to move to Arizona in 2008.

ESL/ESOL

My experience in second language acquisition is extensive and not limited to only theory. My Masters degree is concentrated in English as a second language and am familiar with the difference of Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS, everyday social English which most English language learners can speak) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALPS, school English, the content you need to learn from your textbook).

Furthermore, I understand the difficulty that older English language learners face. On a more personal note, when I was in high school I studied 4 years of Spanish, 5 years of German and a year of Latin. However, I learned Tagalog (Philipino) when I was in my twenties which was easier to learn as an adult because I was immersed in the community.

Language like most everything else is a constant study, and if you don't use it, you will loose it.

General Computer

Good day potential student,

I am confident that many of you who are reading this have grown up in the computer age (within the last 20 years) and are familiar with many of the basic functions of operating a computer. I however, grew up in the age of the type writer and did not obtain any computer skills until I was in my late twenties. Since then I have become experienced in MS Word, PowerPoint and Publisher, and am well versed in American Psychological Association (APA) and scholarly research.

So this request is a hollar out to those adult students who are either enrolling back into school and are not familiar around a computer; and to those students who may be entering an online college. I am a former online college student and I can help you find the best sources for your papers.

Best,
Sonja
