My name is Roxanne, and I am a certified public school teacher for grades K-8 here in Arizona. I have my bachelor's degree in Art Education, and currently teach visual arts. I also taught 4th grade in the state of California for 4 years, and for two years here in Arizona, before transitioning over to Visual Arts. When I was a 4th grade teacher, I worked with students after school in helping them read and write better. My main focus in the after school program was to help students in their reading comprehension skills, in making sure they could understand what they were reading. We did this through a series of studies of underlining key words and explaining what those words mean through writing and speaking. I also helped students with their writing skills, to include basic penmanship, handwriting, as well as basic sentence structure. I also worked with very young students (Kinder through 2nd) in basic math skills.
Since I teach art for Kindergarten through 8th grade, I can also help students with basic drawing skills. The foundation of all good art is a core understanding of drawing, and I am able to help students see things better through a series of grasping the elements of art, which are line, shape, color, value, and texture. I also have an interest in Art History, if their are students that need help studying about a particular artist. My main focus is modern art history, from 1900 to present.
I truly enjoy being a teacher, and the greatest joy I get is working one on one with students, since that is where I feel that a lot of the learning is done. As a teacher who sees hundreds of students, I don't always get that opportunity. I believe a big part of tutoring is also giving students the study habits they need, and building that self-confidence so that they can be successful in their days at school and beyond in high school, college, etc. I look forward to working with your son or daughter to help them achieve their academic goals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
