I enjoy teaching basic math and science skills to students. It's important to understand the basics before moving on to more advanced topics. I take the hands-on approach to tutoring. In other words, I don't give the students the answers. They must work for the answers, and demonstrate an understanding of the concept before we move to the next concept.
My tutoring style is very flexible. I find that taking a complicated idea and presenting it in the simplest terms makes more sense than repeating the incomprehensible explanation given in some of the textbooks I've seen. If I can simplify a concept using apples, oranges, and the occasional pizza, I do it. These are tangible items that students can relate to. I most enjoy seeing the light bulb turn on. That's when I know I've made a breakthrough with a student. Learning is an accomplishment, but should also be fun. I enjoy teaching basic math and science skills to students. We had the great pleasure of having our granddaughter come to live with us for her senior year, however she did not even know her basics so it was a big challenge for her to be able to understand Algebra II, actually she would not have passed and graduated had it not been for Maryellen tutoring her. So I thank Maryellen for her patience in helping her to understand and be able to graduate and continue on to college.
We contacted Maryellen to help my son in Algebra II. She was a pleasure to work with, experienced and a very intuitive teacher. I would recommend Maryellen as an excellent tutor!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra 1 is a great introduction to higher mathematics. I enjoy teaching the basics of algebra 1 because it is important for a student to have a good foundation in math, just like a house needs a good foundation. A good understanding of Algebra 1 will make all the subsequent math classes make more sense.
Algebra 2 covers a wide variety of topics that can be confusing to the new Algebra 2 learner. If one explanation for solving a problem doesn't work, I try to find an explanation that will work for the student in terms the student can understand.
I am a CPhT with national certification. My coursework included pharmacology, dosage calculation, and pharmacy technician law. I also tutor anatomy and physiology as well as dosage calculation for nursing students at ITT Tech. I would like to request certification to tutor pharmacology.
Physical science is interesting because in encompasses a variety of topics such as chemistry, physics, and earth science to name a few. It's a general science rather than a speciality science, which makes it appealing to students and teachers.
Prealgebra lays the foundation for understanding high school and college algebra. A good understanding of prealgebra will make algebra and all future math classes easier to understand and more enjoyable.
