My name is Gretchen and I am a seasoned tutor of students of all ages. I began tutoring math when I was 12 to high school seniors and have expanded my clientele to people of all ages (from 8-50) in subjects such as Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus A-D, English, Literature (Shakespeare included), History, and High School Sciences. I also provide SAT, LSAT, GMAT and BAR exam test prep.
My method of tutoring is to first determine what the best style of learning is for each student and then design a lesson plan/study guide that best works for them. Everyone learns differently (memorization, repetition, rationalization) and at different rates so it is important for me to learn about my client first, then design a tutorial program that fits their learning style so they can readily receive the tools I am providing and incorporate them into their daily study routine. When it comes to test preparation, I prepare study calendars specifically designed for each client's lifestyle and daily routines.
I also believe in working with parents and will provide them with tools that they can use to assist their child in improving their study habits and grades.
I prefer to tutor at the Sunrise Mountain Library at 98th Ave and Lake Pleasant Pkwy in Peoria. I find it much more productive to take the student out of the home environment where there are multiple distractions so we can focus and make the most of our time together.
I received my B.A. from Yale University (double major in Economics and Japanese Studies) at 20 years old and a law degree (J.D.) from U.C. Berkeley, Boalt Hall at 23. My son sought tutoring help with the goal of improving his SAT scores for applications to competitive colleges/universities. Gretchen assisted him in making that happen! From my college-bound son: "Gretchen and I would meet about once a week to go over SAT questions in order to improve my score. She was able to answer every question I had and always had good explanations that greatly helped. As a result I improved my scores quite a bit. Also, she was of great assistance with college essays. I was just offered admission to an extremely competitive college that had an acceptance rate of about 11% this year. She is very patient and kind, and made tutoring sessions enjoyable. I would certainly recommend her to anyone!" Thank you, Gretchen!
Gretchen was very reasonable and provided confidence that allowed me to provide confidence in myself. in a short time she gave me advice and understood areas I need help with.
If you need someone to teach you, this is her. Gretchen's has a clear teaching method and good examples to easily understand law issues!
Gretchen is so knowledgeable and explains complicated assignments in easy-to-understand terms. My daughter can now get her assignments done without stress. Gretchen is also very patient and supportive and knows how to communicate with my teenaged daughter. I'm so happy we found her!
Each time I have reached out to Gretchen I received a reply right away. She works with my daughter's time frame. My daughter really likes her.
I am currently taking brief calculus 212 and was struggling until I starting having Gretchen tutor me. She is really good at breaking things down and explaining them verbally. She provides excellent written examples to back up her verbal explanations. She is a very patient tutor and she answers all of my questions fully. Thank you Gretchen!
Gretchen - She is a god send. My daughter was having a really hard time in math failing and now she is passing with a high C low B. So I would like to say Thank You for everything you have done for her.
Gretchen has helped both of my kids understand Algebra better. One of my kids went from getting a D on math tests to an A. She is very patient and can easily switch gears from Algebra to Chemistry to English. I would highly recommend Gretchen to anyone looking for help.
Our son has been struggling with his math testing and comprehension for many years. Gretchen has opened a channel for him to move forward and provided a foundation for him to check if a problem does arise. Thank You Gretchen for your enthusiasm, pragmatic thought/application and care.
Although people generally seek tutors for children struggling with certain subjects, we have found Gretchen to be a great tool for kids who are in advanced classes. Gretchen has been able to reinforce and review Algebra Honors and Advanced Language Arts concepts with our 7th grader since she began working with her early in the school year. Additionally, our high school junior has done practice questions and gone over test-taking techniques with her the last few weeks to help prepare for an upcoming SAT. Both children really enjoy Gretchen's tutoring style and her flexibility is invaluable because our family is extremely busy with extra-curricular activities and sports on top of academics. We would highly recommend Gretchen as a tutor for ANY topic--she's wonderful!
I was impressed with Gretchen and the interest she took in my son and his needs the first time I met her and I have not been disappointed. She truly has taken the time to get to know him. She identified his weak areas and his learning style. Her approach has helped my son's grades improve and the best part is my son has a better understanding of science and math and is more confident.
Gretchen is a great tutor. Both my children have used her (one 8th grade boy and one frosh girl) and they both like the way she explains math concepts. She analyzes the child's approach and then presents new information in that same manner, so the child gets it the first time! She knows just when to give help and just when to let my daughter rely on her own knowledge, because Gretchen knows when my daughter knows the concepts and when she doesn't! She is very patient, timely and courteous! I would and have highly recommend her!
My daughter has struggled through all of her math classes. Some she just barely passed, others she just didn't understand the material or the concepts. After 3 lessons with Gretchen, the transformation has been unbelievable and quick. My daughter actually "gets" it and so wishes we had found her sooner. If you need someone to make a difference in your child's math grade, stop looking. You've found who you need.
Gretchen is a great tutor, very patient, and very knowledgeable in the subject of algebra. I only had one session with her, but I feel like I got what I came for and more. She also goes above and beyond the call of duty, by making herself available through emails, when not in a tutoring session. I cannot wait until our next session, and I would recommend her to anyone looking for a math tutor.
Gretchen really helped my son get back on track with his math! She was always easy to get a hold of, flexible with her schedule and my son really understood and liked the way she taught! Thanks Gretchen for all your help!
I just wanted to give an recommendation to Gretchen. She was extremely supportive and helpful to my son when we really needed it! She made finishing out the year at school possible and I would highly recommend her to ANYONE!
I don't think I could have prepared for the LSAT without Gretchen's help. She patiently showed me over and over the best strategies for the logic games until I improved at them. She also taught me how to analyze the reading section so I could easily identify the right answers. My performance has greatly improved due to her help.
Also, Gretch has amazing personal attributes that make her a great tutor. She's very nice, approachable, and never makes you feel like you're asking a dumb question. I would highly recommend her as she's worth every penny.
Gretchen is brilliant! She is knowledgeable beyond compare, patient, and understanding. It has been great working with her.
Gretchen is a wonderful tutor. She is patient and pragmatic. Gretchen provided me the tools to process the information for the LSAT. She taught me how to slow down and attack the logic games using a plan. She is candid and a pleasure to work with. I would recommend Gretchen to anyone.
Math all together is not my subject, nor have I ever done exceptionally well in, but with Gretchen's help I have felt the most comfortable in the subject. Her and I quickly tackled a game plan as to what my expectations were for the class, as well as figuring out how I needed to learn the material best. With her patience, we step by step, went through all the covered material I had learned in class, but with her I was able to ask the questions and sometimes go back even further than the calculus class to help remember the processes and multiple steps to figuring out and examining any math problem. She was great with explaining things to me and also using different analogies in order for me to fully understand what it was the problem was asking me to complete. Her hours were accommodating to my schedule, and this also helped alleviate any other stressors as to when I would be able to meet with her before tests and quizzes. Gretchen was wonderful, and I would ask for her tutoring hours again if needed, as well as recommend her to other students.
I can't say enough wonderful things about Gretchen! She helped me tremendously on my paper, and was extremely patient. I was given a topic that I didn't know much about, and Gretchen pointed me in the right direction, and probably saved me "hours" of time. She was available at all times, it seemed, and reviewed my paper immediately--knowing that I was under a time line. I highly recommend her to anybody searching for a tutor, she was truly the best!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
