Arizona State University (Education)
Hello! My name is Bethany, and I am currently a senior at ASU doing my student teaching in a 6th grade classroom at an elementary school in the Mesa Public Schools district. Each day, I have the opportunity to help the students on a one-to-one and small group basis, as well as with the whole class. Last year in the fall, I interned at a junior high in a special ed. room. I worked with the students to help them achieve their IEP goals as well as their daily life skills. The next semester I interned in a 4th grade general ed. classroom and worked with students in the subjects they struggled with as well. By the end of this year in May 2017, I will be dual certified to teach students in both elementary and special education grades K-8. During my college experience, I've really grown an appreciation for my own teachers, and my passion for teaching has increased.
I have had a lot of experience working with kids in general. During high school, I was a volunteer at a kids' summer camp for 3 summers. In summer 2015, I volunteered at an orchestra camp to help the kids practice their different musical pieces. I worked for Arizona Autism United for a year as a habilitation therapist and helped kids with their homework as well as worked with them on their personal life goals.
As for me, I come from a family of 10 and have 14 nieces and nephews. Education has always been a priority in my house, and my parents have taught us to always do our best in school. My little sister had a learning disability growing up, so my mom got her a tutor. After a year of tutoring, she was able to raise her grades and is now attending a college in California. Having seen the positive effects and changes tutoring can cause has made me want to help students as well. I see firsthand everyday that students who need extra time and extra instruction are not able to get it in the classroom during the day. This can be due to many factors such as lack of time, lack of attention, teacher shortage, lack of materials, etc. However, that being said, I believe that tutoring is an effective way to help students succeed by giving them that needed guidance and assistance that is not always available in the classroom.
With my school schedule now, I am available on Tuesday and Thursday evenings as well as Saturday mornings and afternoons. I think a lot of times kids don't realize their true potential, and helping them realize they can do hard things is so rewarding. School can be hard, but it's not impossible. I would love to help your student see that they can master their challenging subjects and reach his/her academic goals. Hello! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor students in elementary school for many reasons. First, I am majoring in Elementary Education (grades K-6) as well as Special Education (grade K-8),. Throughout my college experience, I have been creating and teaching lesson plans based an the Arizona State Standards for grades K-6. Many of our assignments require us to assess, mentor, and tutor students who are struggling in all different subjects taught in elementary school and to track their progress. Also, I have been an intern for a whole year, observing and teaching students one-on-one, in small groups and the class as a whole. As a college senior, I am currently student teaching in a 6th grade classroom, teaching and tutoring the students all day. By the end of the 2016-2017 year, I will officially be a certified elementary school teacher.
