About Andrea

I am interested in offering tutoring services to students because I know I have a gift I can share. Many schools often fail to meet the academic needs of students who struggle in the area of reading. Reading disabilities can be very complex, and the root cause can be a variety of different reasons. I have helped many students who have been failed by multiple interventions. I would like to offer my help to students across the valley who may need more intensive intervention than what their school can provide.

My experience includes 13 years of teaching. The past six years have been spent using Lindamood Bell Curricula with students who suffer with auditory discrimination and auditory processing; the main causes of dyslexia. I primarily use Lindamood Bell curricula; Lips, Seeing Stars Visualizing and Verbalizing. My experience as a Reading Specialist and Interventionist has given me the opportunity to work with a wide range of students of many different ability levels. I work with students on Individualized Education Plans (IEP) for reading disabilities as well as students in the regular education setting who may simply have academic skills gaps.

I use informal data to determine student skill deficit and area of academic need. From there, my lessons are developed around the academic needs of each student. I work to fill academic skill gaps while constantly monitoring and assessing student progress. I work to foster independent learning by encouraging problem solving and working with parents on prompts and activities to help their child become more independent learners. I use curricula from many sources but focus primarily on curricula from Lindamood Bell and my own teacher made materials.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

"Phonological weaknesses or disorders, specific language-based difficulties, are usually the underlying cause of the literacy problems associated with dyslexia." -International Dyslexia Association

I have received intensive training and have six years of experience using Lindamood Bell Phoneme Sequencing Program (Lips). This curriculum is design for students with dyslexia as it provides therapeutic activities for students to build phonological awareness. In addition to Lips, I also use Seeing Stars and Visualizing and Verbalizing to help bridge gaps for students who have fallen far behind due their lack of phonological skills. Once these are improved, students respond quickly to phonics programs and are able to apply phonics rules to reading and spelling.

I have my Master's Degree in Special Education and my Reading endorsement. I have been working with students with learning disabilities in reading for 10 years, and have been working as a reading specialist and interventionist for the past six years. I primarily use Lindamood Bell Curricula as well as my own teacher made materials. Students I have worked with have improved their reading level by 2-3 years after just one year of intervention. Many of my students have completely eliminated their IEP after receiving this intervention and have gone on to earn regular education credits at the junior high and high school level.

Phonics
