About Jacob

I'm excited to share what I've learned about the Chinese language, culture and people. I've learned about this language and culture in Malaysia, Singapore, and China. Traveling, living, and learning among these people has helped me gain a deep understanding of their language. Regardless of whether a student wants to pass a class, practice conversation, or learn how to successfully study this language, I can help. I am tutoring to help support my family and graduate debt free! I'm currently studying the LSAT (Law School Admission Test) and will look forward to attending law school after China.

I started learning Chinese as a Church service volunteer in Malaysia and Singapore (2 years). Since then I have taken CHI 301, 302, 401, 402, 407, 408 and other related courses at Arizona State University. I took two semesters of Chinese in Beijing, and am preparing to return to China in a year to study legal and business courses at a Chinese University as a part of ASU's Chinese Language Flagship program. I have had experience tutoring learners of the Chinese language to help them pass classes. On the first meeting with students I like to understand their goals, what they expect from me, and create a study plan with them. On subsequent visits I will follow up with the student on their learning and application. If needed we will adjust the study plan. When we meet,

I will also offer practical advice on what techniques have worked for me to memorize large amounts of Chinese characters. Because each student learns differently I focus on teaching individuals and not just lessons. Because language and culture are tied together, I will sometimes use culture to explain why certain words are used (or not used), or a story behind an idiom. In basic terms, a lesson would include three basic elements: reviewing the last lesson (answering questions, clarifying grammatical concepts, practicing last sessions vocabulary words etc.), learning new concepts, and applying the concepts learned.

If you'd like to improve on academic performance, language skills, or in making a language study plan for self study of the Mandarin Chinese language, feel free to contact me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I learned Chinese from locals over a 2 year period of time in Malaysia and Singapore. Returned to ASU and studied CHI 301, 302, 401, 402, 407, and 408. CHI 408 is the highest undergraduate language class that can be taken in Chinese. I studied for 401 and 402 in Beijing, China.
