About Ashley

My name is Ashley. I earned a Masters in Education from Arizona State University, graduating summa cum laude. I also have an Arizona Teaching Certification for grades 7-12 mathematics. Currently, I teach middle school math at a public junior high. I also have experience teaching high school mathematics (Algebra 1, Geometry and Precalculus) from my time as a student teacher and long-term substitute. I also earned my Bachelor of Science in Family and Human Development with minors in Communication and Mathematics from ASU, graduating summa cum laude. While pursuing my undergraduate degree from ASU, I also worked as a tutor, Instructional Assistant and grader for the School of Statistical and Mathematical Sciences at the university. Those classes ranged from skill builder classes at ASU to Calculus 3 for Engineers.

I specialize in tutoring mathematics and communication skills. While my teaching experience is extensive with mathematics, I also have a passion for teaching public speaking. Much of my spare time is dedicated to coaching speech and debate. Both mathematics and speech and debate provide students with fundamental logic skills that are pivotal to being critical thinkers. I believe in empowering students to be problem solvers using the skills from both of these activities.

Using the Socratic Method, I guide students through the thinking process. This style of learning often gives students the "why" instead of just the "what."

I look forward to hearing from you to aid in achieving your goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

In addition to taking calculus 1-3 with analytic geometry and earning A's every semester, I was also an Instructional Assistant for ASU. Through the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, I worked with some fabulous professors in Calculus 1-3 courses for engineers.

Logic

I have experience with logic with regard to mathematics and teaching debate skills. I took MAT300 Logic and Proofs at my university which is the "weed-out" course for math majors. In that class I earned 100%. I also teach logic structures with debate (logical fallacies included) which aid in mathematical logic reasoning.

Precalculus

I have tutored Precalculus at Arizona State University. I have also taught Precalculus for a long-term substitute position at a local high school.

Public Speaking

I have been a member of the National Forensics League, a public speaking honor society, since 2006. I competed as a student and made the top 12 at the Harvard National Tournament and qualified to compete in the 2009 NFL National Tournament in Original Oratory. I have since been a coach of Speech and Debate. My students have: won invitationals, won individual state championships, placed top 24 at Harvard, qualified to nationals, etc.
