I began volunteering with international students as an undergraduate, and developed friendships with students from around the globe. I was fortunate to be able to travel and to visit in homes in several countries, which has given me an insight into the cultural background of many of my students. Eventually, I managed to travel to 59 countries in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and South America. I also have relative fluency in eight languages (in some of which I am more fluent than others). Although I taught adult education for 18 years, specializing in courses for adult learners, I also enjoy working with high school and college level students. The majority of my students have been foreign-born, but I have also taught Americans.
For more than a dozen years, I have owned a private school specializing in Accent Improvement for foreign-born professionals, and have also enjoyed teaching a course on slang and idioms. My philosophy is that learning can also be fun, and I hope to be able to teach all of my students through whatever method works best for each of them as an individual learner. I enjoy my students and hope that they enjoy learning from me.
I take an interest in my students and try to provide materials which will be useful to them based on their interests. In addition to teaching ESL courses, I have taught regular English classes, and have been a public speaker for many years. I am an avid reader, and have taught many students both reading and writing skills over the years. I have self-published several books of poetry, and am the author of a number of magazine articles. As a journalist, I reported on a variety of events. Also, I have taught courses on vocabulary and spelling, and was for a time the only teacher in the English department of a small, private university specializing in technology for international students.
I look forward to meeting students who believe that they will benefit from being taught by me. Please contact me if you think that I can be the one who helps you to achieve your goals. I will be happy to provide you with additional information. Let's arrange to start your lessons by setting up a schedule that works for both of us. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught courses in reading, writing, spelling and vocabulary, American slang and idioms, Accent Improvement, grammar and creative writing. I am also a poet, and am currently seeking a publisher for two books, one a children's book and the other a book about the many famous people I've encountered in my life.
I have been a teacher of ESL and of specialized courses in Accent Improvement, slang and idioms, reading, writing, and vocabulary for more than 25 years. I own a private school specializing in Accent Improvement for foreign-born professionals. I have also traveled to many of the countries where my students live and visited in their homes, which helps me to have a cultural perspective while we are working together.
As a Journalism major in my undergraduate years, I also had a minor in Speech and Drama. We were required to perform and to speak in front of the class, and I also have participated in some dramatic productions. In fact, I am currently involved in a Readers' Theatre presentation. I have not only taught in front of Adult Education classes, but also at the community college and university levels. I have done a great deal of public speaking over the years, and I have learned a lot through these experiences.
I am an avid reader myself and I have helped students to select reading material that is interesting and relevant to them. I believe that a student should begin with reading material they enjoy, as their enthusiasm for the subject tends to improve their overall reading level. This teaching philosophy has won praise from my students and their parents.
I graduated with a Bachelor's in Journalism in 1966, and had done my internship at the
Cupertino Courier (California), during which I performed every role, from news reporter and interviewer through typesetter and proofreader. I wrote birth announcements and obituaries, travel articles, and human interest stories. About the only thing I didn't do was the jobs of editor and publisher. Then I became a freelance journalist, and I traveled around the world in that role.
I have been widely published over the years, and am also a self-published poet. Because I have traveled a great deal (59 countries and 48 U.S. states), I have learned several languages, and this has been useful in understanding various cultures. I went on to get other university degrees, and wrote lengthy theses for my two Master's programs. My most recent M.S, is in Political Science/International Relations, and I am currently looking at the possibility of having that thesis published. I am also the author of a children's book for which I am seeking a publisher. These are just a few of my writing qualifications.
