SUNY Oswego, NY (CTE Education)
I am David Q. I was a career construction worker for many years. I went to night school for many years to complete my degree and teaching certification. I got my degree and certification from the State University of New York at Oswego. I was a single father for many years, and I raised my daughter by myself. After my daughter grew up and went on her own: I was able to finish school and get my degree. I also remarried in 2007. I married a woman from China, and I brought her and her son here through the immigration process. I studied Mandarin Chinese in college, so I know how hard it is to learn another language when older. My main degree is in Career and Technical Education. But my Chinese professor was also a TESOL professor. She encouraged me to teach English as a Second Language.
I started teaching CTE in 2007 but soon realized that academics and language were my real passion. I was a very good student; I graduated Cum Laude and have a penchant for using current events and business skills in my language classes. I have been teaching ESL classes for Mesa Public Schools in Arizona for 3 years. I also did a lot of substitute teaching that was very challenging. I taught 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades along with high school. Last year I started tutoring. And I think I found my true area of expertise. I understand what students are going through because of my experience with my wife, step-son and their friends. I have been to Japan and China and truly loved the experience. I have met and taught students of all ages and countries from all over the world. I love it. I love learning about other people's cultures and teaching American culture. I like teaching students things like euphemisms, idioms and slang that are not taught in state sponsored classes, but are needed to be able to be fluent in America today. I ask students what do they want to work on? I like to work with students instead of dictating grammar and rote learning. If they want to learn grammar I will try to make it fun by using Youtube videos that reinforce my lessons. I believe I have the tools and personality to help students with their education goals.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have completed the Structured English Immersion course required for Arizona teachers.
