About Mario

I have spent many years in academia and in the education field. I started teaching at a Drop-Out Recovery Program when I was working on my undergraduate degree in Anthropology. I was also a substitute teacher in every subject for K-12. While I was a young student, I was interested in all subjects, so I took as many classes as possible. I graduated with almost the double amount of credits needed for graduation. It has given me a wide appreciation for learning at all levels and all subjects.

After working in the education field for several years, I completely changed my occupation and became a blackjack dealer. After a stint of two years, I returned to work at the community college level. I decided to further my education and applied for a James A. Michener Writing Fellowship at the University of Miami, which I received. I was a handful of individuals who receive this distinction annually. After receiving a Master in Fine Arts in Creative Writing, I applied and was hired as an English Composition Lecturer at the University of Miami. It is exceedingly rare for schools to hire their recent graduates, so this was definitely quite an honor. I spent two years working in Miami, but became homesick for the Southwest.

Upon my return to the desert, I began to work as an archaeologist. After several years of this tough work, the economy soured and I decided to continue my education. In 2009, I joined the Doctoral program in Borderlands History at the University of Texas at El Paso. In 2012, I received a Masters degree in History and in 2013, I moved to the Phoenix area to pursue research on my doctoral dissertation.

I have high standards regarding instruction. I teach martial arts to children, so I am very focused on self-discipline and control. I ask for feedback and want the student and/or parents happy with my tutoring assistance. As a result, I prefer a brief meeting with each student before tutoring begins, just so we can both assess if we are compatible.

I try to be flexible with time. I have a 24-hour cancellation policy, but I offer makeup classes. I prefer a quiet area for the student to be able to concentrate and focus. However, a coffee shop or university library will also be fine as a location.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have a BA in Anthropology from the University of Texas-El Paso. I have worked as a professional archaeologist in the field of cultural resource management. Along with experience in physical anthropology, I also have conducted ethnographic research which is critical to the field of Cultural Anthropology.

I currently have 24 months of experience in the field of Cultural Resource Management conducting archaeological site monitoring and pedestrian surveys, site recording and assessment, site eligibility testing, artifact analysis, and data recovery excavations. Work areas have included historic and prehistoric sites in the Ohio Valley, Southern/Southeastern New Mexico, and West Texas for clientele such as the Rockies Express-East Pipeline, the Holly Energy Partners, the Fort Bliss Military Installation, TXDOT, INDOT, and private construction firms. My qualifications include all aspects of Cultural Resource Management.
