About Daniel

Since I was a child, I have always loved helping people who needed assistance with English. I was born in the Southwest of Texas, and my family spoke strictly Spanish. When my parents moved to Michigan, I had to learn to speak English to attend school. When I became proficient in English, I began teaching my parents the language. I would interpret legal papers, applications, rental agreements and doctor's notes. With time, my parents adjusted well and learned the language, but they always spoke with a strong accent. Those experiences helped me to become sensitive to those who are concerned or embarrassed about their accents.

I have taught ESL with a language company in Lansing, Michigan. I have enjoyed working with my students and embraced the challenges of each situation. I have helped in business transactions with a gentleman from South America, operating in the Meridian Mall. With my help, one of my students became a citizen of the United States. I also have helped native students who just want to improve their reading and writing skills. I thrive on the knowledge that I am able to help instill a level of confidence for those adjusting to a new culture.

Among my hobbies, is participating in Civil War and World War II reenacting. I am very knowledgeable of not only American History, but also World History.

My teaching techniques are simple, but thorough. I combine a narrative teaching style with examples and stories. I use a lot of analogies with up to date verbiage.
My ESL instruction utilizes a lot of props, newspapers, menus, applications, medical inquiries, bills, etc. Outings to coffee shops and libraries are a good source of practicing. I believe in using everyday, practical English, including axioms.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Baseball

I have played baseball since a child growing up in Detroit, MI.
I played on the high school team and continued playing in hard ball leagues in and around Detroit. I have coached little league in Holt, MI. I also have played in an over 30 hard ball league in the Lansing City League.

Bible Studies

I was the lay person at Crossroads Community Church where I filled in as associate pastor. I conducted Bible Studies on Sunday mornings, Wednesday evenings and Thursday mornings.
