I have taught multiple grades in my 14 years as a teacher with the Mesa Unified School District. I have a great rapport with students from kindergarten through 12th grade, however, I specialize in 2nd through 8th. I believe that if a student doesn't learn the way I teach, then I need to teach the way he or she learns. Whatever the student's needs are, it is my job as a teacher to meet them. I have tutored and taught subjects from remedial reading using basic phonics to algebra 1.
I have a deep-rooted belief that the best learning takes place when the student is engaged and having fun. I spend each and every day as a fifth grade teacher trying to bring laughter and smiles to some pretty difficult lessons. I love my job and my students. My day is never complete until I've turned on a light bulb in someone's brain. It brings a sense of confidence to the student and a feeling of accomplishment to my own life. No task is too large or too small. Every bit of knowledge we gain in this life makes us a more complete person. I love being a part of that process!

Our daughter really enjoyed working with Alexis she made the learning fun for her which isn't always easy. She looks very forward to her next lesson.
My daughter really liked Alexis and is excited on working with her again. I was listening to them from another room and really liked how cheerful and friendly Alexis is and how right away she started with her lessons.
Alexis is very thorough and explains issues & problems in subjects of Science, History, Math Plus; very, very well. We had brought her on-board to assist our son with Math and she has helped him with all of his subjects and Alexis is the best thing that has happened to us, in regards to our son's learning abilities. She utilizes real-world examples, for his comprehension issues. She really is very good with him and very personable and polite. We have had a chance to review her work and listen to her tutoring for several weeks now and we are so happy with her, she is excellent! Homework has always been a challenge and now that we are in the High School mode, tutoring makes it so much easier for all of us! Thank You WyzAnt!!
My daughter looks forward to seeing Alexis each week. Alexis makes what is normally a teeth-pulling experience with my daughter so much fun. She uses games to teach concepts and is very patient. This is a must, especially with my daughter who does not like to sit still for periods of time.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In the regular education classroom, I have taught students with varying needs. ADD/ADHD is a very prominent label at this time. Not only do I have a child of my own who suffers from this, but I have had many students who do as well. Many different strategies can be used to help these students focus and be successful.
I am a certified fifth grade teacher, working currently in the Mesa school district. I have taught students from second through sixth grade in my time with the district. My degree from NAU included a dual major with both elementary and special education.
From time to time, even as a general education teacher, we include students with many special needs into our "circle of friends." Besides my training in college for working with students with special needs, I have had the opportunity to provide inclusion services for students with emotional or learning disabilities in my classroom. We have welcomed students with Autism or Aspergers into our class on a full time basis as well.
