I am a current student at Arizona State University majoring in Psychology and Political Science and maintaining a 4.0 GPA. I have been tutoring for about 8 years now, and I have acquired certain strategies and tools that can be very helpful with test taking and writing. I have been involved in speech in debate for 5 years and I am currently a member of the ASU forensics team. I am currently aiming to obtain a J.D./PhD with a focus in psychology and plan to continue teaching/tutoring throughout my professional life. In addition I have worked for a couple of political campaigns in the past and have had a lot of success. In addition, I was involved in a law internship through a private law firm. This positions have tested and improved my communication skills and organizational skills. With these skills, I can bring forth an excellent tutoring environment for students, and ensure they receive the knowledge and experience necessary to improve their grade and ensure they have a bright future.
I have been tutoring since I was in 6th grade, therefore I understand how important it is for students to get help in their studies early. Experience is extremely important when it come to education, and I am not a tutor that just helps students memorize facts and numbers. My philosophy is that students should gain real experience, not just understanding the material. With me, students can gain vital critical and analytical thinking skills that will not only help them understand the material, but actually be able to apply the material in a real life scenario. That said, I believe in student led sessions in which the student is in charge for the bulk of the session while I guide discussion, add input, and make corrections if necessary. Erik worked with our son who is having some difficulties with Jr High math. He arrived on time and spent an hour working with our son. He reviewed areas that were problematic, discussed alternative strategies to solve the math problems, and helped him prepare for an exam. He was patient, understanding, and knowledgeable. Our son felt the tutoring was very helpful. He said he has a better understanding of the math problems, how to solve them, and most importantly his confidence level increased. We have had two tutoring sessions so far and plan to continue working with Erik, we are very happy with his services.
I am bad at writing, but I'd like to say that Erik is very patient, understanding, and sweet with my daughter. She is always looking forward to her tutoring sessions with Erik. Highly recommended.
I was impressed with Erik's level of professionalism. He spent 6 weeks over the summer working with my son on study skills and he came prepared each week with something for him to work on. He took the time to review different ways of studying and determined how my son learned best. He then not only worked with him to reinforce that skill, but worked on the other ways so that he could improve in all areas. Erik helped my son learn the best ways to study for concept-based, mathematical, as well as factual subjects. It was an over-all great experience.
The girls learned a lot from him in a short time. They both stated what they have learned will help them next year and on. It was nice that he told them if they want to talk and ask a quick question, he will try to help, then told them that their professor or teacher will also be able to help.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I currently maintain a 4.0 GPA in my college studies and graduated high school with high honors. In order to accomplish this I used many study techniques to not only memorize facts but to analyze and conceptualize items in order to retain the knowledge and use it in everyday life. I also have many test taking strategies that can help students do better on tests. Along with personal experience I also have eight years of experience tutoring students to prepare for tests or other assessments through tutoring and peer tutoring programs.
I have been playing violin for about ten years. I have played in both my school orchestra as well as formed a quartet in which I played for local community events. I have been involved in symphonic orchestras, honors chamber orchestras, and have been a first chair violinist in my high school orchestra. In addition, I have also helped teach beginning students violin while volunteering at summer school sessions.
