I am a mother of two, born and raised in Japan. I attended Japanese business college, then went on to Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah. I was a Japanese language instructor at the Missionary Training Center while attending school at BYU. I worked for an English-Japanese translation company in Salt Lake City, Utah, translating an English learning program for Japanese people by Mackintosh called MacEnglish. I have a twenty-four year old daughter and a seventeen year old son. I currently substitute at an elementary school near my home.
Regarding tutoring: Come see me with an open mind. Casual conversation is helpful if you are hoping to learn how to speak. Repetitious practice is necessary in order to learn to speak the language. Don't be discouraged. I know how you feel; I myself learned English, doing the same thing. Don't be afraid to ask questions, even if you might think it's a silly question. If you are hoping to read and write, it will take time, but with persistence you can do it. Again, repetition is the key. Read a lot, write a lot, speak a lot. You will need to use all senses.
The more you use the language, the better you will be at it. Practicing with a native Japanese will be very beneficial.
All the best!

Small group (two or more up to four) lessons are $30/per student.
Mayumi answers my endless questions in a thoughtful way designed to make a difficult language more accessible. I especially appreciate it that I am able to have questions answered via e-mail between sessions.
She is practically a psychiatrist, always knowing how to overcome my fears and give me practical tips to combat the insecurity of any learner that he is speaking gibberish that no one will understand.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
