About Kenneth

I'm a Stanford University Mathematics major and an instructor at Mesa Community College, with extensive tutoring experience in Arizona and California. Previously, I was a high school mathematics teacher in Pacific Palisades, California and Louisville, Kentucky, and even in Thailand as well as at College Preparatory Center of Aramco (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia).

I believe that every student willing to work can succeed in his or her progress through the courses of mathematics. I believe that from every course a student should obtain insight and retain mastery over the key concepts, and that such understanding forms the basis for further advancement. In other words, a math course is not something to do once and then it's over and forgotten.

I hope to meet you to help you--good communication and encouragement will produce the success you want. My practical approach will smooth some of the rough technical edges of mathematics for you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

Having taught both college and high school, I am qualified by experience as well as schooling in mathematics and in the art of listening to students and getting them the help and understanding that they need.

Algebra 1

Having taught both college and high school, I am qualified by experience as well as by schooling in mathematics. Over the years I have perfected the art of listening to students and getting them the help and understanding that they need. For several years I was a tutor at MCC as well as teaching Algebra courses at all levels. Currently I teach Calculus at MCC. My teaching career began at Palisades Sr. High School in California.

Algebra 2

I've taught both college and high school and am qualified both by experience as well as my mathematics major (Stanford).

I teach College Algebra, Intermediate Algebra and Calculus at MCC. Other courses that I have taught include MAT182 (Trigonometry), MAT218 (Mathematical Methods for Business) and MAT142 (College Mathematics).

When tutoring, I practice the art of listening to students, to get them the help and understanding that they need. I get right to the point and guide the student to solve problems based on key principles. I have many clients seeking to improve their results in the SAT exam. I also help people prepare for the GRE.

In addition to college teaching, I have consulted to an international corporation, tasked with preparing questions for online products for GMAT test preparation.

ASVAB

I've been tutoring all levels of math up to Calculus for several years, since retiring from high school and community college teaching.

My solid education at Stanford University is the base of my success in teaching and tutoring.
I concentrate on key ideas and the reasons behind them, coupled with sensible practical uses of these basics.

Calculus

Having taught Calculus at both college and high school, I am qualified by extensive experience as well as holding a mathematics degree (Stanford Univ.). My tutoring experience goes back as far as 1987.

I practice the art of listening to a student to discover gaps in understanding. Then I zoom in to where the math student needs help. I help the student gain insights, and thus build confidence.

In this past school year, I helped an ASU student to achieve an A in MAT251, and helped a junior at Hamilton High to achieve a top ranking (5) on the SAT Calculus BC exam. All parents involved expressed their satisfaction with the tutoring.

GED

The GED is an important exam, and much of it depends upon careful reading to determine the meaning of a sentence, or to locate and correct a deliberate error (spelling or syntax) in the phrasing. I possess the skills and training to assist anyone in this. In addition, a lot of the test has to do with competence in basic math, such as percentages and fundamentals of algebra, so my Mathematics Degree and copious teaching experience are very helpful when tutoring those in need of passing GED.

Geometry

Back in my high school days, Geometry was the first math class that I found really intriguing. It influenced me to want to become a math teacher, and that is eventually what happened.

I taught Geometry when I began teaching in California, and for the last 12 years I've been teaching a variety of courses up through calculus, at MCC.

I have a great deal of tutoring experience in this subject, and I hope to help you gain insight and understanding into this most basic building block of math.

You owe it to yourself to build a solid foundation in order to avoid stumbling blocks in your path.

GRE

The GRE is an important exam, and much of it depends upon careful reading to determine the meaning of a sentence, and to choose the correct answer by reasoning and interpretation.

Perhaps more importantly, in the Quantitative Reasoning part of the exam, a candidate must demonstrate good knowledge of numeracy, algebra, geometry, probability, statistics, distributions (Bell curve) and the like.

My Mathematics Degree and copious teaching experience are very helpful when tutoring those in need of passing GRE. Because this is such an important milestone in a person's career path, it's wise to get an experienced and well-rounded math tutor, and I offer you this choice.

Precalculus

Having taught both college and high school, I am qualified by experience as well as schooling in mathematics (Stanford Univ.)

I practice the art of listening to students to discover what they need. My tutoring experience goes back to 1987 when I taught at Palisades Sr. High School in California.

AT MCC I teach Algebra (at all levels), Trigonometry and Calculus.

I am sure I can help you.

Probability

I am qualified to assist students in the subtopic of probability, embracing also binomial, normal, Poisson and hypergeometric distributions. In the recent past I have taught a course at MCC that includes this material (MAT218).

(I suggest a TI-84 or TI-83 calculator to any student in this area.)

SAT Math

Dreading the SAT? Want to maximize your score, which affects your acceptance to the college you want? If so, I think I'd be your best choice to review all of the math topics that are included in the SAT.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is one of the most elegant parts of mathematics. If you are given the key to mastery of it (which I can do for you), it's extremely enjoyable. It's a major component of eventual success in Calculus, and so the requirement should be taken very seriously. With my heavy experience teaching at high schools in California and Kentucky, and at college since 1999, I can make Trig a success for you.

Excellent Geometry Honors Tutoring - Very patient and effective! — My daughter required some very short notice help to get her caught up and clear headed for a Geometry Quiz. She had a lot of anxiety about meeting with a tutor as she felt "behind and stupid" in her course work so far this year. Kenneth immediately put her at ease and covered a summary of her chapter problems with her. In one hour, he was able to help clear up a lot of her questions & concerns, ...
