About Debra

Coming from a homeschool background, I have had much experience in a tutor-type setting. Being both the recipient of a one-to-one school setting, and being the "teacher" to younger grades has given me a unique perspective in education. During my music studies, I was blessed with two superb instructors. Their methods of instruction and personal virtues of patience and perseverance combined with the passion for seeing the student excel are all a part of what I strive to emulate in my instruction.

My many experiences in horticultural employment may seem unrelated at first. However, in my jobs, I have been able to work with many different personality types. In addition, there have been many instances of teaching. From basic plant ID, to pruning techniques to crew leading, all these experiences have given an opportunity to develop. Other experiences include teaching two sessions of Sunday School for grades 1 and 2, organizing and developing English activities for non-native speaking adults and children, and teaching piano lessons and theory to 3 students ages 5-8. Regardless of the age or subject, I promise to do the best of my ability to help the student succeed.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Most of my past experience instructing has been to children between the grades of K-6. During the 2011 school year, I taught Sunday school to a class of six students in 1st and 2nd grade. This summer, while acting as a live in nanny and mother's helper, I instructed her children, ages five to eight, in piano, catechism and music theory.

Piano

I started piano lessons at nine years old. After continuing for nine more years consecutively, I ended them. However, during college, I missed the music so I returned for two more years. During my first nine years, I participated in various piano festivals. In addition, I completed the MMTA (Michigan Music Teachers Association) tests each year. Their comprehensive program includes testing in performance, technique, aural awareness and theory. After receiving lessons from two superb teachers, I have taught a few months of lessons to a blind women in 2011. This summer, I taught three children ages five, seven and eight.
