I am a life long math lover. I majored in chemistry at Albion College, graduating magna cum laude. After graduation I worked for five years in the pharmaceutical industry. This gave me a lot of practice using math in my work setting. I used statistics to analyze data. I also had to use a lot of basic math skills to do conversions and use different formulas. After my time in industry, I then switched gears and have spent six years working as an accountant and bookkeeper. In my spare time I always worked as a tutor for high school students, focusing mainly on ACT and SAT math, along with geometry, algebra, and algebra 2. I have spent time as an online tutor focused on junior high math and geometry.
All of this translates to years of daily math use. I am used to taking math skills and applying them to real life needs. Beyond that I have spent the past few years tutoring students in various math disciplines. I have tutored math for the ACT, SAT, and for high school prep exams. I have worked with students from elementary school through adulthood, specializing in the high school level.
I know not everyone likes math. What I like to do is try to find ways to show students that the skills they are learning in math class can be applied to real life, sometimes in unexpected ways. The practice of math is about more than just getting the right answer. It is about learning reasoning and logic, along with practical skills that get us through life.
I have experience in tutoring pre-algebra, algebra 1 and 2, geometry, probability, statistics, ACT math, SAT math, and high school exam prep math.
My goal is to help you reach your goal. For some students that is to get an understanding of a subject when classroom learning just isn't enough. For others that is an accountability partner that can provide additional practice and challenges to move beyond what they are doing in school.
I have experience with some common core methods, and have the resources to work on those concepts with both students and parents. I want to partner with students to explore math and reach a true understanding of what the topics in question are and why they matter. Learning math can be about passing a class, getting a good test score, or just understanding more on the subject. My goal is for you to reach your goal, and I am not satisfied until you do.
I can tutor online or in person. I am looking forward to working with you!
