Hello! My name is April, and I would love to be your/your student’s tutor! Hello! My name is April, and I would love to be your/your student’s tutor! I have always had a passion for teaching and tutoring, having tutored professionally for 9 years now in a range of math subjects from Pre-Algebra through Pre-Calculus. I began tutoring in high school, helping an Algebra 2 student who was failing his homework assignments and tests to receiving A’s and B’s on his homework and tests, pulling his overall grade to above passing by the end of the year. Math has always been a strong subject of mine; I completed up through AP Calculus BC in high school and went on to tutor and be an instructional student assistant for several math courses in college at California State University, Monterey Bay for 5 years. Here, I completed my Bachelor’s of Science in Biology and a minor in Mathematics. Currently, I am a remote graduate student at the University of Vermont and am looking to complete my Master's degree in Biology this semester. I also was a teaching assistant for an introductory college Biology course last Fall 2018 semester. Most recently, I was an instructor at Mathnasium in Arizona (January-June 2019). Although most of my formal tutoring has been in math, I have often helped out colleagues in science as well, as that is what most of my higher education training is in, so I’d be happy to tutor in the sciences as well.

My tutoring philosophy is that there are often multiple ways to solve a problem (at least when it comes to math), and that each person is unique in what way makes the most sense to them; thus, tutors should aim to help their tutees determine the methods that suits the tutee best. My tutoring style aims at getting my tutees to truly understand the problems they are trying to solve in their homework and tests, not just aim to happen upon the right answer. I was fortunate to have great math teachers in high school that focused on critical thinking in problem solving, in truly understanding the logic behind the math. If a student understands the logic, and how to critically think about solving a problem, it doesn't matter if the way they get to the answer is a bit different than their peer's way or even the way I solve it. If there are multiple ways I know how to solve a problem, I like to show that to my tutees to help them come up with the way that makes the most sense to them. I am a kind and patient tutor who understands that everyone learns in their own way and at their own pace. I am passionate about helping each student to be the best they can be and am skilled at implementing various tutoring strategies to meet the individual needs of my tutees (I myself am a visual learner, so I like to use graphics, real-life examples, and a whiteboard when I tutor). Also, I like to make the tutoring experience fun, enjoyable, and engaging, as learning should be!

My experiences from high school through college and now graduate school have provided me with extensive tutoring and teaching opportunities, including opportunities to work with students that have learning and other disabilities. Overall, I am very experienced when it comes to tutoring, and I love helping students work through problems, develop their critical thinking skills, and overcome obstacles to learning the subject. I love helping my students/tutees become as passionate about learning and education as I am!

Elementary Math

I started tutoring Math during my senior year of high school (when I was taking Calculus 2), and after graduating valedictorian went on to college to earn my B.S. in Biology with a minor in Mathematics (with honors). During college I tutored from basic Math through Calculus for 4 years, and continue to use Math in my research and teaching as a Master’s student in Biology. Elementary Math is exciting to tutor/teach because it allows for the opportunity to help the tutee with learning foundational math and helping them be confident in their abilities.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

April tutors my daughter weekly for 8th grade Math. She has really helped her become confident in her math work and get down some basics that she was struggling with.

Knowledgeable and compassionate

Both of my daughters have worked with April; one in pre-calc and one in biology. She knew the material well and took her time to explain it. She was very patient and understanding. She went above and beyond and made a study guide for my youngest's daughter upcoming biology test.
