I have taught math at the high school and college level for 28 years, tutoring throughout that time, prior to my retirement in 2016. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Pomona College, one of the highest-ranked liberal arts colleges in the nation, in 1986. Pomona taught me many things, but mostly that learning can and should be an end unto itself, and that it can be incredibly rewarding and enriching. I have always tried to instill that in my students.

I earned my Master’s degree in Education from Grand Canyon University in 1989, where I was a member of the first class of Master’s degree recipients. Grand Canyon instilled in me the fine points of Madeline Hunter’s Essential Elements of Effective Instruction, which I used as a basis for teaching throughout my career. Years of experience have made me well-versed in Cooperative Learning, Outcome Based Instruction, Reciprocal Teaching, and Structured English Immersion as well, just to name a few. I have taught many students with limited English proficiency, and I enjoy the challenge of communicating in the universal language of mathematics. I am dual-enrollment certified, and I have taught Precalculus (MAT187) as a dual enrollment class in the Maricopa Community Colleges since 2006.
I remember being a high school student, and what it was like to lack confidence in math. Math comes easily to some people... I was NOT one of those people!! However, I was able to eventually succeed and gain confidence, thanks to the patience of teachers, professors and friends... so much so that I ended up being a math major! Throughout my career I have always remembered that, and tried to be a patient helper also. My many years of teaching and tutoring have made me capable of quickly assessing a student's area of difficulty; for every area of difficulty I can reach into my bag of tricks and find several approaches that help clarify concepts and reinforce learning. Sometimes it just takes fixing a few basic problems to turn a reluctant math student into a star.
I hope that you will give me a chance to help you reach your goals with math, whether it is to fix problem issues and succeed in your classes, prepare for standardized testing, prepare for college entrance exams, or just build your confidence. Please contact me for your tutoring needs in high school math from Algebra to Precalculus. I would love to be of service!
