I became interested in teaching while working with homeless pregnant women in downtown Phoenix. Many of the women I worked with had difficulty finding suitable employment because they lacked many basic skills and education. I began working with high school students in order to better prepare them so that they would not find themselves in a similar situation with very limited options.
While working for the home for pregnant women, I graduated with distinction with a master's degree in Secondary Education. Then, I worked as a high school history teacher for past six years, teaching all levels including AP US History. I love to see students get excited about learning and overcome challenges. I am very patient and encouraging and believe that all students can improve if they are willing to work. While tutoring individual students, I break down complex problems and subjects into manageable parts so that students can work on one part at a time and not feel overwhelmed.
I specialize in tutoring K-8 history and social studies, math, writing, and reading. I graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in History (a history degree is almost completely reading and writing!). I also was a National Merit commended scholar and scored in the 99th percentile on the ACT (including a perfect score on the science portion).
I have a flexible schedule and can tutor any day except Sunday with at least three days prior notice. If you should need to cancel any of your sessions and can give me more than 24 hours’ notice, there will be no cancellation fee. If you cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice, there will be a $25 charge that must be paid before the next scheduled session. A charge of $50 will result in any “no show.” Likewise, if I should need to cancel with less than 24 hours’ advance notice, I will take $25 off of your next scheduled session.
Please contact me with any questions. I look forward to meeting you and helping you achieve your academic goals! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor elementary students in all subjects. I have a master's degree in Secondary Education, but many of the concepts relate to teaching students of all ages. In addition to six years as a high school teacher, I also spent two years tutoring elementary students through the America Reads program while in college. I now have elementary aged children of my own and spend hours each week working with them individually in reading, math, and science.
I am an AZ certified high school teacher in History. I was a National Merit Commended Scholar and graduated in the top 2% of my high school class with an International Baccalaureate diploma. Math was always one of my strongest subjects and I was given an award from the Women Engineers Association upon graduation because of my achievement in math and science.
