Although I was formerly trained as a Photojournalist I draw on the practiced talents of over 20 years shooting commercial advertising photography, both as a staff or freelance photographer. My specific photographic disciplines include product photography, technical jewelry photography, executive portraits, landscape photography, lifestyle photography and event photography.
While camera technology changes rapidly, the elements of a good photograph never do. The elements are fun to teach and easy to learn. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
While Adobe Photoshop is a very deep program there are many basic tools that, once practiced, will accomplish most workflow needs.
Here are some of the basics that I would teach the student to get the student started on their Photoshop journey:
1) How to make a duplicate copy, or layer, of the image you are working on. This way, you can make all kinds of adjustments to the copy without damaging the original. Also, an explanation as to the amazing creative power that having layers gives you.
2) Where to find the adjustment tools. Initially using the automatic adjustment tools but gradually learning to make the adjustments manually with much greater control over the image.
3) How to turn the duplicate copy on and off to enable you to see the effects the adjustments had on the image.
4) How to re-size and crop you image for emailing and uploading to the web.
There are many more basics that will help the student gain proficiency in Photoshop but the best way to learn is to open a copy of Photoshop and begin experimenting with the basics.
My University training in Photography was Photojournalism. Over the past 20 years I have adapted that education to shoot almost entirely as a commercial advertising photographer both as a staff photographer and as a business owner in a freelance capacity.
I have used strobe systems and hot lights as part of most photo shoots. Speedotron, Dynalight and Norman strobe systems and at times will combine strobe lighting with incident lighting depending on the subject matter. Additionally I have used 35mm film cameras (mostly Nikon), 21/4 film cameras (Hasselblad), 4x5 view cameras, 8x10 view cameras and 35mm digital cameras.
I spent much time processing and printing black and white film both as a University student, as an employee and as a hobby. Many of these techniques have been incorporated into modern day Photoshop to aid photographers that are familiar with darkroom printing and the tools used in that capacity.
I have used my skills in product photography and Photoshop to photograph and upload images to a personal, online, retail website to sell windchimes.
Over the years my greatest talents and largest portfolio pieces lie in:
*Technical Jewelry Photography
*Editorial Assignment Photography
I have had the privilege of working for a number of quality organizations that share the creative drive. I consider most of these companies as clients that returned to me on a repetitive basis as testament to their vote on my quality of service and photography.
