Bio

For six years, I taught a variety of chemical engineering courses at the university level, but I missed the one-on-one level of instruction I engaged in when I was tutoring as a student. As a professor, I was a member of both the American Institute of Chemical Engineering and the American Society of Engineering Education. My research area was in the area of engineering education, so I am well versed in current methods and I explored methods of my own design.

For six years, I taught a variety of chemical engineering courses at the university level, but I missed the one-on-one level of instruction I engaged in when I was tutoring as a student. As a professor, I was a member of both the American Institute of Chemical Engineering and the American Society of Engineering Education. My research area was in the area of engineering education, so I am well versed in current methods and I explored methods of my own design.

I have experience in tutoring calculus, chemistry, thermodynamics, and physics at the high school level and at the college freshmen level. As a professor, I have taught design, economics, thermodynamics, separations, and visual basic programming.

My approach involves many strategies. First, as an expert in thinking styles and "brain preference," I observe my students to understand how they learn best. In a lecture format, that is prohibitive, but in a tutoring session it is ideal. In other words, the method of presentation can be tailored to the student's needs.

Another strategy is the Socratic method. In other words, I answer questions with more questions. I guide the student to uncover the answer themselves. The questions also serve as a template of what they should ask themselves when I am not around.

Finally, I attempt to get at the root of understanding, rather than just "here's how you get the answer". The latter may work for a homework or short term, but a deep understanding will facilitate actual learning and growth. For example, using the definition of how a derivative is a ratio of infinitesimally small changes versus JUST a mechanical operation provides deeper understanding of what it is and how to use it.

I love watching students grow and learn and I do what I can to facilitate that growth. I utilize my knowledge of learning types to help individualize how material is presented for maximum understanding.
